Excitement Poll: Should PMS be automatically archived in full?

Topic List
#001 | Kodiologist |
I don't think it would be very difficult to implement, but I'm of two minds as to how nice it would be to have such an archive. On the one hand, a lot of what we post is of only momentary interest. On the other, it would amuse me to be able to read these messages ten years from now. Is anyone else interested? Or is anyone uncomfortable with the idea of their posts being saved forever?

(I know this has been brought up before, but I don't remember what the consensus was.)

I would be way more excited about the ones from ten years ago being available now, so I can only assume it would be neat in ten years.

I would love to see this happen. Especially if we could resurrect the old files from the last ten years. I'd love to read some of that stuff from 2001-2004...

Does somebody have all those posts archived? I thought they were lost to the mists of time.

i could swear a while back mith mentioned some kid who had, like, every single topic ever archived because he was keeping a cyber log of everyone on the site or something.

Do it.
And if you can implement it for LUE, you would be a god.

He was but apparently grew bored with it. After archiving over 75 gigs of crap he must have realized that most of it was crap and deleted all of it.

Also, using the method he did, LUE wouldn't be accessible. The only way to auto-archive that would be to route it through an account that had access.

Yes, would love having it archived.

I was in the mood for a Thursday-morning hack, so I slapped together a mirroring program. It'll do until I write (a) code to extract the text of interest and (b) a decent Web interface for the archive. The one sticky part at the moment is date handling:

I'm using mimir227 to download the pages, which account happens to (illegitimately, you may recall) have LUE access, but I have no intention of mirroring LUE. I've never liked it.

Could you share the code with LUE then even if you don't personally want to take responsibility for it? A lot of LUEsers would really go for it, myself included.

Sure! I am, after all, a believer in free software. Is there someone to whom I should email what I've written?

Do you have a LUEable account? You could make a topic there describing it and say that you have this code but you don't really want the responsibility of hosting/maintaining it.

Pff, I don't want to pitch it to them. Here's the right thing to do: once the code is reasonably mature, I'll put it on Arfer.net, and then anybody who wants it can use it.

Well, if you don't mind sharing it here, I can link it on LUE once it's ready (and if you'd care to explain it a little to me, if necessary), and I can credit you for it.

Pretty sure he doesn't want credit there.

Just saying.

Well, if you don't mind sharing it hereā€¦

Whatever page will have the Web interface will also have a download link to the code. I will of course link to this page when it's done.

With respect to credit: in order to copyleft the program, I'll need to claim copyright, so the source will have "Copyright 2010 Kodi Arfer" all over it, don't worry about that.

Aww, and I just recently updated the old one manually. Do you have a link for us?

No, it'll be a while till I get 'round to implementing an interface. I also want to clean up the archived data a bit.
