So is there some reason we can't just light it on fire, and in a few hours it'll have burned off without really raising the temperature of the water around it? Like wouldn't the slick be just a few microns thick at a given point, and thus burn off fairly quickly?
Like I know it's not a good idea because they haven't done that, I'm just not seeing why. Unless it's some general aversion to seeing the seas burn.

It has something to do with the matter in the oil sinking into the water, all the gunk that's stuck together because of the oils that make it float.
I think it's the matter of substituting catastrophic air pollution for catastrophic water pollution. At least as long as it's still liquid it's somewhat manageable.
