I think I heard about it because the Penny Arcade guys were loving it. It's by Naomi Novik, and as an idea of what it's about, think that His Majesty's Dragon can be abbreviated to HMD, much like His Majesty's Ship can be abbreviated to HMS.

That is a damn good book. The series has kind of gone downhill a little though.
Also, one thing that bugs me is why dragons haven't taken over the world yet.

Yeah, I've started the second book and it's very disorienting. I feel like I haven't had a chance to collect myself, even though I'm 26% of the way through.
