In case any of you wondered how my laptop search went: After looking at brand after brand, model after model, review after review, and not finding any one solid laptop that I really liked both for power and price, I decided to check the university computer store's website, to see if they had any good deals. Well, they had one special deal left in my (rather frugal) price range, on a pre-configured Lenovo Thinkpad T400, a respectably boxy and businesslike machine, with good specs (except for mediocre battery and screen resolution), and with a 3-year warranty included, and all for the pretty darn decent price of $799. It's a bit boxy for my taste, and not quite as lightweight as some of the models I've looked at, but a good deal.
So, thank you, University; I go down to the store Monday afternoon just before it closes and ask about the T400. The guy checks in the back, says they're out of those -- the entry on the website needs to be taken down -- but somebody did recently cancel an order for a similar laptop, a T400s. It's $200 more, but it's thinner and lighter (and less boxy, nice). The guy says it has similar specs to their T400, except the graphics are integrated so it's not so good for gaming. That's fine with me; I'm a console guy. He can't give me the exact spec sheet at the moment but it sounds solid; I go home to think about it. I decide to go for it and next morning I come in ready to plonk down a grand for a new machine. I get to look at the stats, it turns out it's also got bigger resolution and battery than the other system. Yippee, and I walk out the owner of a brand new Lenovo.
Then three days ago I accidentally discovered my new laptop has a touchscreen. Just straight up four-finger multitouch. And I've pretty much been a giddy schoolboy ever since.

The comparable model runs $1900 on Lenovo's site right now, which is after a $450 discount and comes with a year and a half less warranty. You think you could've ordered it for cheaper?
