Alternative rock is a good catch all, so I usually go with that when pressed for an answer. If I'm not being pressed, I usually just say I listen to "whatever", because I think it's a pretty uninteresting and unanswerable question. If there's genuine interest, a mutual exchange of mix CD's has always seemed like the best course of action. Or a last.fm link if it's an internet conversation.
