While walking home from work today, a book in the window of a used book store caught my eye.

My friend Josh had mentioned earlier in the summer that he wanted to make a movie called 'Way of the UW Ninjas' so naturally the title really got my interest. It's a kids book (obviously) about how the three friends, the ninja, the cowboy, and the bear, always play, hang out, and generally get along, until one day the ninja insists that the other two play some games his way since the normal way is boring to him. The bear and cowboy grow to resent the ninja for this and decide not to play with him for awhile. The ninja is content playing games by himself, until he realizes how lonely he is. He goes back to the cowboy and bear, who forgive him, and they have tons of fun playing the games the old fashioned way.

It's pretty much the best kids book I've seen in awhile, and seeing Josh's face light up when I gave it to him made me really happy, too. Just thought I'd share though.

That is kinda ironic because ninjas aren't suppose to be seen. Oh and by the way the best book ever is The Badger and the Magic Fan by Tomie. Johnston Tony & DePaola . I use to be able to recite the whole book word for word.

So the ninja goes back to things that are pleasant and familiar but unchallenging? Wouldn't it be better for the ninja to sometimes see his old friends bear and cowboy, but to make new friends who share his interests? Like other ninjas, or perhaps packs of itinerant ronin?

I agree, Willis. While I think it's cute, I think it's a little backwards to teach kids to take the easy road just for the sake of being with "their group."
Then again, I have a habit of believing children's books are out to brainwash kids. It's probably a bad thing to believe.

Also, a samurai would have never been friends with a ninja, Willis. That just goes against class codes. XD

To clear things up about the book, the friends of the ninja kept suggesting activities that the ninja thought would be incredibly boring, so he kept rejecting them in favor of the things he wanted to do. After the friends got back together, the ninja actually found out that the things that the bear and cowboy wanted to do were actually much more exciting and fun than he originally expected. So it was really more of a 'don't judge a book (an activity) by its cover' sort of challenge for the ninja.

Seriously though this is a really cute book and if you see it, pick it up for your niece or nephew or something. Granted I got it for my friend who's just a couple years younger than me, but that's because he really likes ninjas.
