So the ninja goes back to things that are pleasant and familiar but unchallenging? Wouldn't it be better for the ninja to sometimes see his old friends bear and cowboy, but to make new friends who share his interests? Like other ninjas, or perhaps packs of itinerant ronin?
To clear things up about the book, the friends of the ninja kept suggesting activities that the ninja thought would be incredibly boring, so he kept rejecting them in favor of the things he wanted to do. After the friends got back together, the ninja actually found out that the things that the bear and cowboy wanted to do were actually much more exciting and fun than he originally expected. So it was really more of a 'don't judge a book (an activity) by its cover' sort of challenge for the ninja.
Seriously though this is a really cute book and if you see it, pick it up for your niece or nephew or something. Granted I got it for my friend who's just a couple years younger than me, but that's because he really likes ninjas.
