Stereotypes game

This is the stereotypes game!!

I have always wondered what people think about things I'm involved in, since, being on the inside, it's harder to get that perspective.

So the theme is: state. Or location, for the non-Americans.

I'll take the first blow- when I say I'm from Michigan, what do you associate Michigan with? Whoever wants to know what we think of their state, write your state here!

what do you associate Michigan with?

People calling an area of sand in front of a lake "the beach." That's crazy talk!

Seth: What are you making?
Evan: I'm just drilling holes. Last two weeks, **** it.

DarthMarth, one of my best friends went there. Holland's a cool town... don't really know anything about the college itself other than that it's extremely expensive.

Minnesota - a lot of nothing around, and funny accents, but nice enough people. Also, cold.

Virginia - lots of trees and backwoods living, but unlike the states just west of it, it's a little classier than just a bunch of rednecks

I'm a New Yorker. When I arrived in Minneapolis, I was all, "This is a major American city?"

Yeah, I know, Kodi. The only thing, I think, that makes it somewhat like a major city is the fact that people drive like friggin' loonies in and around it.
Um, it's hard to do a stereotype for New York since there's SO MANY of them, but I'm going to go with "typical east coaster who thinks seeing the ocean is a big deal and is something midwesterners never get to see." Also, the ocean is lame. It's a lot of water. WOOOOOO.

I'm from north-central Iowa (trust me, there's a reason for me to be specific on this).

Minnesota, what BUM said. Virginia, I think of mountain men. New York I think of rudeness and power naps. Iowa... corn.

Alright, now you've got me curious, what are the stereotypes for the various regions of Iowa? Though from Iowa, and in Iowa, I've lived longer out of Iowa than in it.

The longest I've lived anywhere is in Minnesota, and if you all thought Minneapolis was small, I don't know what you would have done in the town of about 900 I used to live in.

I thought I saw upon the stair a little man who wasn't there.
He wasn't there again today. Oh how I wish he'd go away.

North-central Iowans are different because they think they're different from the rest of Iowa. Though, this is mostly the people in Des Moines, who honestly refer to the city as "the metro." Really, the only "big" part of Des Moines is the ridiculous amount of suburbs sprouting from it.

New York... city or upstate? City makes me think busy, loud, rat-race of life. Taxis, gridlock, poor people, and too much ambition. NYC probably evokes powerful stereotypes or thoughts because it's so pervasive in society, like Texas or similar areas. Upstate has a weird mystique for me, mostly because I associate New York with NYC and it blows my mind to remember that it's got the Catskills and a quieter life.

Iowa, well, I know little about Iowa. I just think of floods and a quiet, rural life. More in touch with society than Minnesota (this prejudice probably stemming from Iowa being more central to the US) and not redneck like some southern Mississippi river states, just kind of the quiet side of normal.

Oh, when I say "New Yorker", I mean "Manhattanites". We Manhattanites are terribly elitist. We permit residents of the other boroughs to call themselves New Yorkers only reluctantly; people from Buffalo or Albany calling themselves New Yorkers is simply unthinkable. The Catskills, of course, are (or once were) largely populated by vacationers from the city.

It looks like there are psychologists at the University of Texas at Austin studying just the kinds of things I want to study, but the thought of living in Texas frightens me. I tend to think of Texas as a place where people shoot first and ask questions later. Besides the fact that it's so hot there, of course.

When I think of Michigan, I really don't think of much else other than people showing each other what part of the state they're from by holding their palm up. In Washington, you can do sort of the same thing, if you take your left hand, palm facing you, curl your fingers inward as if making a fist, and then placing your thumb into the indent your curled fingers make. Bonus points if you're trying it right now.

Minnesota?

"I didn't know vikings still existed!"
"They mostly live in Minnesota!"

I've got nothing.

Virginia

I've only been to Virginia once, and that was back in 1996 or so, so I must have been like... 8 or 9. (I'm 22 now.) All I remember is thinking how pretty it was. That and it was one of my first experiences with jetlag.

When I think of New York, I think of people who are outwardly rude to each other but secretly actually care about each other. That and then the rest of the state that people hardly think about.

That's all for me right now... I'm from Washington state. Anything other than rain?

I remember when I was in Washington that girls seemed to have more visible facial hair than in Michigan. And I think of pine trees, lots and lots of pine trees. And mountains. And roundabouts. That's it I think.

Usually whenever I visit another state my first thought is "where the hell are all the trees," but that's usually because the other state that I visit is California and I stay with family in the valley where there are hardly any trees.
