To me, that's the textbook definition of arrogance, but obviously there's a meaning I'm just not getting. Alex? Travis? Can someone explain?

Seth: What are you making?
Evan: I'm just drilling holes. Last two weeks, **** it.
Why do you ask? Is this some kind of Christian message? I've never seen that shirt before.
I don't get what the lines are for.

I don't understand why you have this picture or where you pull this "arrogance" from.

I'm talking about the message on the shirt. It's one I see a lot. Just trying to hear it explained from someone who would know...no hostility was intended. :)
---
Seth: What are you making?
Evan: I'm just drilling holes. Last two weeks, **** it.
Alex: It is...I've heard multiple variations on that theme as well in the same setting.
Mark: I assume it's for concessions at a West Michigan Whitecaps game.
---
Seth: What are you making?
Evan: I'm just drilling holes. Last two weeks, **** it.
So I'm confused. How is an indecipherable message the textbook definition of arrogance?

I don't think I'm interpreting it correctly given my background.

Yeah, I think you're going to need a little more blunt here. Is this a God thing? If so, I feel like there's a bit of a difference between faith and arrogance. I'm not the religious type, but I would think that the same idea could be applied across multiples faiths. Could be wrong, though.

It's not a quote from the Bible, unless it's just a badly butchered one or something; Google gives 0 results for that exact quote.
Oh, I get it; if you ignore the lines, it's "go out certain of what you don't see" meaning some metaphysical object of reverence.
Still not really seeing "arrogance," let alone a textbook definition of it, though. Is it the notion of certainty rather than belief that bothers you? 'Cause that's just a basic thing with devotional language: the real beliefs of a religious tradition are identified as true, and indeed even more true and more truly real than the imperfect reality of the day to day. If you want to call that "arrogance," go ahead, but go say hi to A. J. Ayer and a number of other people one doesn't politely bring up at dinner parties for me.

Ah, got it. It's from Hebrews 11:1:
"Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see."
I'm barely certain of what I do see, let alone what I don't. I feel like not being able to see something is a pretty good indication you shouldn't be certain of it, no?
---
Seth: What are you making?
Evan: I'm just drilling holes. Last two weeks, **** it.
In the Cartesian tradition, I'm actually more certain of things I can't see. I can't see the Bolzano–Weierstrass theorem, but I'm pretty sure of it. With religion, of course, the problem is that most claims aren't true by definition. Nor are they false by definition; they're pseudo-empirical.

Jordan, I don't think you'll buy the explanation because you don't buy any of the premises. A lot of the Bible is like that... one can come up with great apologetics but when it comes down to brass tacks, someone who doesn't believe just doesn't believe.
Is it arrogant? No. I think arrogance is more than just being sure of yourself... it's an attitude. I'm certain that 3 times 4 is 12, and I wouldn't let anyone sway me to believe anything else, but I'm not arrogant about math. The goal of the passage isn't to trick someone into being sure of something they ought not be... it's to encourage them to remain sure about what they ought, rather than letting the world get them down. It was written to an audience and by an author that, in general, had as much belief in Christ as I have in 3x4=12.
I can't tell if the speakers had no idea what they were saying or whether the reporter had no idea what the speakers were saying. I assume the latter, but it could've been a weird lost in translation thing.

I dunno, the speech as reported is weird and meandering, like the person giving it didn't have a keen idea of what he wanted to convey, or the person reporting it didn't have a keen idea of what the speech-giver meant to convey.
