Over the past week and a half or so I moved back home with my parents and sister and have been helping reorganize the house and our garage since we no longer have my dad's work storage unit. So we've been clearing out spaces for old machines and all of his other equipment.
But in the spare time that I've had in the few past evenings I've been playing Paper Mario. I found an old save file that was halfway through Mt. Lavalava and just yesterday I defeated the Crystal King for the last Star Spirit.
Time to go take on Bowser, I guess... after I finish some sidequests.

In January or so, the last time I played Paper Mario, I went without items or star powers. By Chapter 7, the game began getting really easy because of all those powerful late-game badges, so I stopped using partners in battle. Also, at some point, I decided to use no more than half of my BP (I've already forgotten the details). Crystal King was a real challenge. And yet I never got very good at the defensive action command, which is all the weirder considering how consistently I could Superguard in The Thousand-Year Door.

I finished up the last chapter today. I tried fighting the Anti Guy Unit just for kicks, and even though I used Chill Out in conjunction with Water Block to give me at least a +4 defense against all of their attacks, I went down fast and hard. I should have stocked some Repel Gel or something.

Or you can just spam Mega Shock.

Yeah, I could never manage defense in the first game, but also found it way easier in TTYD.

I think it has a little to do with hardware limitations on the N64. On the more graphically intense attacks, there's a notable delay on when you'd think you should press A to defend, and the actual time you can press A to defend.
Also, I thought of the Mega Shock strategy, but entirely too late into the fight, and then it only paralyzed them for two turns anyway. It should have been my game plan from the beginning.
