I thought I saw upon the stair a little man who wasn't there.
He wasn't there again today. Oh how I wish he'd go away.

Many happy returns of the day. Are you the big two-oh?

Many happy returns of the day. Are you the big two-oh?
Psh that was so last year.

So, hey, for some reason I'm glad you didn't all wall-assault me on Facebook. I feel like if there's one thing in life Facebook has taken the magic out of somewhat, it's birthdays. Everybody can see it coming so nobody gets points for remembering. Plus, this year, my friends plotted to surprise me with a cake, but they were plotting in a public event where I can see it. I knew it was coming anyway but dangit I like surprises.
So that's my rant.

Oh, so you're just a few months younger than me. I thought the difference was a year or so.

How different is "many happy returns" from "please don't die"?

Please don't die!

It does make me feel like the effort I've put into remembering some people's birthdays is lessened because of FB.

But happy birthday to you!

How different is "many happy returns" from "please don't die"?

Well, it does specify happy returns. A birthday experienced while on life support would probably not be a happy return of the day.
