Hey Pooty, why don't you think Obama's done a good job?

Here are some of the things that he's done in office over the past year-and-a-half or so:

Which are the ones that you don't approve of, or the ones that you wish he did but hasn't done? Just curious.

Embryonic stem cell research is listed as if it's a positive, when really there are many people (such as myself) who don't see it as so.

It's an interesting list, but it's not like I agree with all of it...

Ok, I'll bite. Here's just the first few that popped up (Since I believe it generates pages at random, no?).

1. Increased funding for national parks and forests by 10%

My take: That 10% needs to go elsewhere. Sure, the environment is great and all and I DO believe in conservation to an extent, but in a world where we have FAR worse issues (the economy, foreign affairs, etc.) this is a waste of money. Something like this is a LUXURY when things are stable at home, which I doubt any of you can claim right now. Oh wait, healthcare would be a "luxury" too in this day and age yet he didn't care about that either. The man is deluded and doesn't have priorities.

2. Appointed more openly gay officials than any other president in US history.

My take: Who cares? Sexual orientation should NOT matter. This is an ambiguous claim, but I'd be pretty pissed off if a homosexual official got preferential treatment over a "straight" one. I am all for gay rights - but, like the abysmal Affirmative Action program, it seems to me that rights MAY not be shared with all. Also - BFD. Is this really a quality that can be attributed to a "good job"?

3. The American Recovery & Reinvestment Act of 2009: a $789 billion economic stimulus plan

My take: I could spend an entire topic on how piss poor the so-called stimulus plan was. But I can sum it up in one sentence: a vast waste of money that didn't do a damn thing.

4. Voluntary disclosure of White House visitors for the first time in US history.

My take: Again, who cares? This is the man who wants to "negotiate" with terrorists like a coward. I don't care and this doesn't help the country.

5. Appointed first Latina to the US Supreme Court.

My take: B.F.D.

Those were the first 5 that popped up. The only MODERATELY good one is the first one. Want me to keep going?

I'm pretty sure leading economists agree that the stimulus was a success, inasmuch as it was a much better idea than what anyone else did, and also was a better idea than inaction, but Republicans cover that up because it's convenient for their case.

I agree with the "who cares" points of yours. I really don't care. I mean, ok... it's good he's not prejudiced, but aside from that it doesn't really impact anything.

I think your negotiating statement is blown out of proportion. First off, it's always better to make peace than war, if it's achievable. When it is not, we make war, because that's the way the world works. Talks of peace with *moderate* factions of Taliban was the aim, not talks of peace with people who drive around cutting off women's noses and shooting up schools. That's not an example of a moderate person. Someone like Hitler you cannot make peace with, so you move on to war. Moderates, who have turned coat on Taliban, have been instrumental in waging war against the terrorists because of the information they provide. Surely that's a resource that should be tapped? Second, talks of peace do not equate to surrender.

Also, are you typing this message from Afghanistan, or planning to be there soon? I would not be so quick to call others cowards when I was not fighting for what I believed in. If you are going to be there I'll gladly repeal that statement though.

Talks aside, the war is still on, and likely it's spreading to Yemen and other fronts, and likely America and its allies will be there to meet it.

I'm just gonna chirp in here and second the notion of the stimulus being a good thing. When everything is still gloom and doom, it's hard to see how 10% unemployment nationwide (or around that?) could be a good thing. But the fact of the matter is, without it, the number would be closer to 12 or 14 (or around that?). Sorry, I'm a little too tired/drunk to look up the actual figures.

Maybe not a real BFD in that it isn't an economic cure all, but it is helping.

Sure, that's great short term. Now I want you to look into a little thing called inflation.

The cost of food has already increased 10%. The reason for that is that the gov printed 800 mil worth of bills and bought US Bonds with it.

Wait, fabricating money out of nothing and shoring up our economy with it? Sounds good, there can't possibly be repercussions from that. . .

Doing a little research I find that there are a good number of economists who think the stimulus leads to inflation. It begs the question of what good it did versus what bad it created, and whether or not there were better alternatives.

That's a hard one to debate, considering that what evidence there is for other alternatives either are produced via hindsight, or are old plans that have a following now who have a loud voice. The loud voice may make an alternative sound good, but because that alternative lost the race, there's no point in the "winning" team to debate it. So you only get the good points without the bad.

I'm not an economist, and I'm not all-aboard with Washington's decisions, so I'll repeal my stance on the stimulus for now. But the thing is, I'm never aboard with Washington. It doesn't matter who's in office, things are backwards because the society allows for corruption in all levels of government. Does someone going on a spending spree to blow one trillion on trying to save America's economy seem any worse to me than someone who blows trillions on going to war with another country and netting America nothing in return?

Also, there are as of yet no reports of the stimulus killing anybody.

Interesting article. I don't quite know what to take from it. It's at least a bit hopeful for a better future (the part about US economy being stable or improving) but there seems to be a lot of discontent about the Fed's plan. Also a lot of uncertainty, which is to be expected.

All I hope is that whatever happens, things work out in the end. I don't know if the Fed's plan is a good one, and it doesn't sound like it has a lot of support. But then again, not a lot of people saw the writing on the wall before the global economy tanked, and so even the brightest minds are not always able to predict the future.

Let's just hope whoever has the best ideas gets them put into action, for the sake of my wallet.
