Rather unfortunate, really. What ever happened to good, cohesive, dynamic music? Where the trumpet is as important as the electric guitar, the violin as important as the drums? Something with a little subtlety and depth, and lyrics that aren't as transparent a piece of saran wrap.
Anything?

I've always been quite fond of Radiohead.

I've heard of Less Than Jake but aren't too familiar with their music. The YouTube clip I just played made it sound indistinguishable from the lowest common denominator of pop punk. Not a good sign.
I've tried a few times to get into Radiohead but it never seemed to gel. Maybe it's worth another shot.
Fred, what is this crap that you speak of?

DarthMarth - Better than a bowl of Cheerios.
Trans-Siberian Orchestra's older stuff seems to fit the bill, minus the vocals (since there aren't much of any), to some extent.
I'm just gonna throw Apocalyptica out there, since they kick major ass in general.

most of If You're Feeling Sinister. then again, lately i've been into Silversun Pickups, The Transplants, and Radiohead so softer stuff doesn't tickle my fancy. took me a while to get into Radiohead, though.

Whoa really? I thought If You're Feeling Sinister was the best thing they ever put out.

If you like trumpet and violin, I would check out Sufjan Stevens! Especially Illinois.

This past summer I started listening to them. I personally dig the pop-punkish stuff as opposed to the more ska-based stuff, but I like them. Recently I've become a huge fan of The Graduate. Not sure if they fit what Jordan is looking for, but I cannot listen to their music without finding something new about it to like.

Everything I have would be enough for someone else, but I want more.
Days Left: 398
save Get Me Away, i find it unmoving and lacking in dynamics. its like if you took the soundtrack from The Sims and put lyrics to it.

I dunno, it's so representational. It's that style that I think of when I think of the band. The poignancy, the frailty, the unassumingness. Not to mention just brilliant musical writing and instrumentation throughout, right along with Tigermilk. The track on the new album that harkens back to that style both musically and lyrically is probably my favorite on the new album ("The Ghost of Rockschool").
What do you think their best work has been? The entirety of Fold Your Hands Child, You Walk Like a Peasant is grossly underrated, especially "I Fought in a War" and "The Model." I applaud the sort of transformation they've gone through over the past 10 years but there's a lot of The Life Pursuit I'm sorta meh about.

heh that's funny 'cause i really dig TLP. have you heard of The Antlers? their album Hospice is amazing; it's a concept album so it's best to listen to it from start to finish as opposed to picking at songs.

Will check out. A housemate presented Vampire Weekend to me today, seems interesting. Ever heard? There's just something, though, about vocals that seemed too forced and excited. Just sing your part and let the listeners get excited about it. The emoting should be a byproduct, not the focus. I dunno.
Sufjan seems promising as well, but I don't know where to start. I like the song from the Babies movie.

I'll second Illinois by Sufjan Stevens. It definitely fits the multi instrumental, frail and poignant bill. Especially the song Chicago. Super good. It sounds like you'd like The Arcade Fire, too. All dynamic and cohesive and stuff.

yeah ive heard some vampire weekend. i'm not entirely familiar with their stuff but i'm not too crazy about what i've heard.

I mean, have you tried prog rock? I <3 King Crimson, and their early stuff especially has a lot of traditional instruments. They were pretty stoned for long swaths of The Court of the Crimson King but it's worth a listen except for the last twelve minutes of Moonchild.

I second prog rock. Porcupine Tree is prog rock.

Yeah, I also have this thing about the electric guitar not being the lead instrument in every, single, song, my God. To me it's just another instrument in the ensemble, along with drums, bass guitar, acoustic guitar, synth, piano, trumpet, strings, flute, horn, and vocals (a female soprano to round things out never hurts). Here's two good examples from the band:
"The Model"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pqEYhOKLwRE
"Blue Eyes of a Millionaire"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G8iDanv82vs
I mean, good God, in "Blue Eyes," during the second verse, the string section continues their presence from the chorus by accenting the beginning of each line with a tasteful pizzicato. This is the **** I'm talking about. I feel like with a lot of other bands I need that picture of the cartoon old lady but it says, "Where's the intricacy?"
Also, harmony. Kind of necessary.

I forgot about Beirut! I was going to buy one of their albums when I heard a housemate listiening to it but it somehow slipped my mind. Apparently it used world music as its basis which is really, really neat.
In any event I love what you just posted, so good sign.
