Couples totally make out better in regards to presents.

Like that garden path topic title?

Not that I'm actually complaining about it, of course, but think about it. The two people in a couple never individually give a present, it's always "from us," yet each person in that couple will receive a present, putting couples ahead of single people in terms of net gain.

Although, rethinking it, perhaps it balances out because the couple has to give to twice as many people?

But I suppose that is only true when bringing together two diverse sets of family/friends. Obviously disjoint sets of family will still happen (otherwise, ew), but if they have the same friends that's a plus.

I'm sort of under the impression that if the couple has been together long enough, their main group of friends will have already converged, so there might not be as many 'extraneous' friends to have to double-buy for.

There's also that many people get jaded with gift-giving and don't really send material items except to a select few people. It may be a false negative from people in their Matron Stage or otherwise early post-young'n'hood that they switch over to cards and don't send material items.
