So this is going to be the topic where I update you on my weight loss and fitness. I started on Monday and my best guess of what I weight was 330 (oh my god). I'm 6'5" and would like to drop down to about 190-200 pounds so my goal was to lose about 140 pounds. This, however, is an estimate because the scale I have in my house doesn't go above 300...oops.
Since Monday I've cut carbs out of my diet (especially sugar) for now. Yes, I'm doing Atkins...or something similar to it. It may sound unhealthy but I've checked into it, and I'm also taking dietary supplements to help. If it starts to get dangerous, fear not, I know how to take control of my own body and fix things...I think. I've also started working out a lot more. This includes Cardio workout DVDs, Wii games intended for fitness, weight training, and this ab routine that I learned back at school while taking an acting class meant to help keep actors (or anyone really) in shape (I specifically say actors because my major was acting).
tl;dr: I'm trying to lose weight and get in shape, and this is just the beginning.
So here's how this topic will work. I will post two goals in each post: A short term goal, whatever that may be at the time, and my long term goal, to drop down to 190 pounds hopefully by December 31st of this year. Each time I accomplish, or fail, to meet one of my goals I will make a new post updating you all on what's been happening in the life of smithy and his weight loss, and then change the short term goal to whatever the new goal is. So here we go:
Goals
Short term: Drop down to 300 pounds by January 24th.
Long term: Drop down to 190 pounds by December 31st.
I will update this topic next when I have reached 300 pounds or on January 24th, whichever comes first. Feel free to comment in this topic on anything you like or ask me any questions, or make suggestions to help, cheer me on, link me to things, debate about the healthiness of the atkins diet, put me down and tell me I can't do it, etc. in this topic.
Signing out for now,
Smithy

Atkins is probably a good idea, but I would urge you to discuss your plans with a doctor soon. I would expect that eating the Atkins diet continuously for long enough to lose 140 pounds would be dangerous; I'd expect that you'd instead want to resume a normal diet occasionally. Your PCP can probably make a better guess at a good schedule than I can.
I also recommend that you avoid dietary supplements. Unlike drugs, the FDA's power to regulate them is very weak, so at any given time, lots of ineffective ones and a few dangerous ones are still readily available. For example, there was at least one highly publicised death due to ephedra before the FDA finally got ephedra banned.

Everything I know about Buddhism I learned from Journey to the West.
Good on you, dude!
But a couple of things to think about:
-Your short term goal is unreasonable and sure to be a discouragement. The rule of thumb is that a healthy (ie without suffering malnutrition) weight loss regimen should see you knocking off like a pound a week. Now it'll probably go quicker at first, but for thirty pounds in two and a half weeks, you'd really need to all kinds of things that I don't recommend, the least of which is starving yourself.
-Something like Atkins is okay if you stick to it like a hawk (exactly, literally like a hawk; only eat rodents), but it can be pretty limiting in, say, social outings, and you can get other complications from staying on it for too long (a year is probably too long). Atkins also has a very low rate of keeping weight off, because it doesn't really teach proper nutrition, but rather adherence to a set of rules. You'll have much better mileage with something like weight watchers or just keeping a food diary and counting calories (it sounds really lame, but it's good).
It'd also be good to join a support group or something; I'm told Weight Watchers is sort of weirdly cultish, but if your local YMCA or gym offers personal training, it might be worth it. Otherwise SA has a really good subforum with lots of information about nutrition, exercise and all that stuff:

Good for you man, though I agree that your short-term goals and maybe even your long-term goals are a bit unrealistic. I'm 6'2" and 210 lbs with not much fat on me. You might consider leveling out at 215 or 220, though you'll be a better judge of how you feel and what you think you should weigh as you get closer.
As far as the short-term goes, a better benchmark would be to lose 10-15 lbs considering it's really a little over 2 weeks time. Not saying that losing 30 lbs can't be done in that amount of time, but it's more harmful to your psych (stress) and body to lose that much that quickly. You won't be feeling good if you do hit that target. Aim for something more sustainable that won't be as punishing to yourself and you'll do better in the long run.
Also, talk to Jakob about this if you need to. I helped him to lose a ton of weight a few years back and as far as I know he has kept it off. He'll likely have some good pointers for you.
Good luck.

(Accidentally hit "post" too early.)
As someone who (at 6'4) dropped from 230 pounds to 170 pounds* in the span of five months in 2008, I am proof that setting a goal and working to complete it is possible!
As far as a few pointers that worked for me, here goes:
Watching the portion sizes on what I ate was almost as important as what I ate.
The purpose of losing weight isn't to create your own personal hell through the journey. As Wil said, being strict on what you eat can prove very difficult in social settings. While you will want to limit the amount that you eat out, it is not something you have to avoid entirely. Make sure to ration appropriately.
The power of substitution
Some things that traditionally use beef (i.e. tacos, chili, etc.) can easily work if chicken or ground turkey is substituted in for it. If you insist on using beef, substitute a lean beef. When I have burgers at home, I use a lean cut of beef.
Set attainable goals at the start. Make them stricter if necessary.
My goal was not to lose that amount of weight in that amount of time. I wanted to drop 31 pounds (to get below 200 pounds) between the 1st of May and the 31st of August (when I started student teaching) and get to 180 pounds at an unidentified point during the school year. I set a goal of losing 8 pounds each month. Because I became such a workout warrior, I wound up hitting the 199 pound mark just before July 4, 2008. I was able to set new goals, and I hit the 180 mark days before I started student teaching. If I had set goals that were too lofty, it would've been very difficult for me to continue. I set attainable goals, and the achievement of those goals provided me with the drive to continue and aim higher.
Most importantly (for me, at least), find a workout that works, and STICK TO IT!
I'll be honest. The first month of losing weight I didn't really eat all that well. I still put down fast food on the weekends. That said, I still dropped from 230 to 217. How? Because I found a workout that worked, and I stuck to it. I fell in love with the elliptical, and I had a mile goal each day. I did some lifting as well, but the cardio work was what got me to where I wanted to be. At the start of the summer, it took me 24 minutes to go 2 miles on the elliptical, and I was huffing and puffing by the end. By the end of August, I could do 10 miles in 48 minutes and barely break a sweat. Find a time during the day that works, and stick to it. It'll become as second nature as brushing your teeth.
So, good luck to you on this journey! I hope you'll find it as rewarding as I did. Not only did I get my body back, but it also gave me a world of confidence and the belief that I have the ability to set lofty goals and achieve them. If you have any specific questions (or even want to work out sometime, as we're moderately close geographically, feel free to hit me up.
*After getting to a low of 168 pounds, I decided that was too low for me, and I decided to keep my weight between 185 and 195 pounds.

Oh, I forgot to mention that I'm pretty sure I've already lost a little weight because the needle was WAY over 300 and now it's not as far...and my clothes are a little loser so I don't plan on losing 30 pounds in 2 and a half weeks. It's more like...20 pounds...ish. This problem would have been solved if I wasn't so overweight to begin with that I could actually read how much I weight >.>
And when I said dietary supplements I meant like a multivitamin and Omega 3,6,9 which are some essential acids that my body will need more of when my body's on this diet. Nothing crazy.
Thanks for the encouragement guys!

Smithy/Freepizza/Heydude/Monty/Shadowspy
Oh, and I didn't plan on staying on Atkins for the whole year. Just for a chunk of it. Maybe switching over the a plain old healthy diet and counting my calories better will be a short term goal in the future. :)
---
Smithy/Freepizza/Heydude/Monty/Shadowspy
Triple Post...sorry.
One more thing. I've switched over to eating 6 small meals a day instead of 3 larger meals and I've been watching my portion sizes too, this should make transitioning to a healthier diet later on much easier.

Everything I know about Buddhism I learned from
Journey to the West.
I know somebody -- one of my teachers in high school -- who lost 100 pounds in a year. She lifted weights and played basketball and probably ran. And she's in her 40s. She went from (my guesses) about 300 to about 200.
I would say one to two pounds per week shouldn't be exceeded. And I personally know that Medical Weight Loss works... both of my in-laws are on it and have lost 40 and 55 pounds since July 1st. They say they're never hungry or starving themselves. And they are learning a good structure that they can continue even when they go off the "weight loss mode" and into "maintenance", or even quit doing MWL altogether.
Great to hear you're really serious about this Smithy. The offer's still there if you need any help with the workouts. Looks like you've got a real handle on everything else.
I personally wouldn't suggest lifting weights (in the beginning at least), especially if you're looking to just purely lose weight vs adding on some extra muscle. Also, if you do plan on adding some muscle, but a bit more generous with your goal. Mith mentioned 210, and I agree with him on that. Muscle weights more than fat.
Oh, and I just wanna say this. I'm not trying to make myself seem smarter/know more than you do, I just want to help with anything you might need.
Good luck!

^--Problematic; if you're looking to lose weight, it's important to do some weight training. If you are burning more calories than you are taking in, your body will burn all sorts of things, both stored fats and stored proteins. The storied proteins (to make it a very simplistic situation) are in your muscles, so you should be doing some resistance training to keep up those strengths.

There is also the fact that having muscle burns calories more than not having it, which can compensate for the fact that it weighs more.
My suggestion based on my own weight loss (215 to 170) is drink lots of water. Lots. And if that is the only kind of beverage you have, all the better. I mean, I occasionally drink other things (esp. alcohol), but the only time I have soda is as a mixer to said alcohol. I think I would attribute a good amount of my weight loss from stopping drinking soda.

Actually, that's another step I'm taking I forgot to mention. I have, since Monday, drank nothing but water and am going to do so through this whole process, and probably for the rest of my life, besides alcohol of course. Although I've given up alcohol for a little while because obviously that's not going to help me with my weight loss.

I won't pretend to know much at all about dieting, but I recently read up on Alton Brown's diet, which he used to lose 50 pounds in 9 months. From Wikipedia:
"His first list he eats from daily include: fruits, whole grains, leafy greens, nuts, carrots, and green tea. His second list he eats from at least 3 times a week include: oily fish, yogurt, broccoli, sweet potato, and avocado. His third list he eats from no more than 1 time a week includes: red meat, pasta, dessert, and alcohol. His fourth list includes foods he avoids which includes fast food, soda, processed meals (such as TV dinners), canned soups (salt), and anything labeled "diet" because this was not a diet."
Good idea/bad idea? I'm not sure, but it helped him lose weight, and hey, it's Alton Brown. Either way, best of luck man.

Fun fact: I don't remember posting that.
Also, I once heard sleeping with a window open referred to as an "old anorexic's trick." That paints in a rather negative light (I guess because it's weight loss without exercise) but if you can do it, it works similarly to drinking lots of cold water.

I come bearing good news! Keep in mind that 330 was just an estimate. I didn't want to use my wii balance board to weigh myself because it only holds 330 and I may have been slightly over (or a little under, couldn't tell though). So, since I couldn't weigh myself on my own scale and get an accurate read and I couldn't use the wii balance board (yet) without fear of breaking it an estimate was the best I could come up with at the time (I'm sure it was anywhere between 320 and 335). Well, I can tell by looking at myself in the mirror and the slight changes in my body that I have lost some weight. So, I weighed myself today on the wii balance board, being pretty sure I'd lost enough weight to step on it and use it properly, and the results are in...
I currently weight 310 pounds. Now, this of course means I don't know how much weight I've lost, but now I have concrete numbers to work with. So all guesses aside, I am now starting my first set of goals from 310 pounds today. So, this means my goals still stand and are a little more realistic now.
tl;dr Not sure how much I weighed when I started, but I have definitely lost weight and now weigh 310 pounds.
Goals
Short term: Drop to 300 pounds by January 24th
Long term: Drop to 190 pounds by December 31st

I figured, right off the bat, weight training is probably not as effective, coupled with aerobic exercise, as it would be on someone who has been exercising for a few weeks. I guess that's just my bias speaking there. I'm not a fan of weights and prefer to do push up/sit up kinds of exercises.
Which reminds me...
http://hundredpushups.com/
It's a website that lists workouts for anyone of any ability to be able to do 100 push ups in 6 weeks. I've done the workout myself (for only 3 weeks because I'm a lazy sack of **** =/) but it is great. There's more information about the program on the website as well as links to other workouts with a similar format (200 sit ups/squats, etc.)
If you get into doing running, here's a website I've heard some good things about:
http://runlogger.com/
I've never used it myself, but I know plenty people who have and said good things.
Great to hear on your loss so far Smithy! Wow that could sound terrible out of context...

Sorry "weight training" should really be "resistance training" and include that sort of thing. That's pretty groovy.
Although a little bit of literal weight thrown in wouldn't hurt!

Link, thanks for the links (pun intended). I just bookmarked the pushups, situps, and squats and will be starting those tomorrow. I can't wait to see where this goes. Also as far as running goes, I was born with a disability in my right foot and CAN run, but not for very long. It's more beneficial for me to walk. I have been walking a lot more lately so...hooray! I weighed myself today and I weigh 307. 300 by next Monday doesn't look likely but I'll probably come close which makes me happy! I'll probably reach 300 by the week after that so woohoo. But I'll let you all know at the end of this week if I actually made my goal or not.

Smithy/Freepizza/Heydude/Monty/Shadowspy
The results are in. I'm down to 303. So, I didn't achieve my goal, but I came pretty close. Even if I didn't exactly accomplish my goal, I did make a big stride in weight loss. My next short term is to lose those 3 pounds this week.

Oh, and if you need any further inspiration (it seems like this topic has a fantastic support structure already) look no further than my old college roommate.
In August 2008 he was 5'6" and weighed 248 pounds.
By August 2009 he was down to 160 pounds.
Now, as of January 2011, he is still 5'6", but a svelte 148 pounds.
All he did was change his diet - he never worked out a second.
So just know that within a year you can lose AT LEAST 100 pounds. Couple a proper diet with exercise and BOOM - you'll be looking great in what will feel like no time!

I weighed myself today and I weigh 301 pounds. Not my goal, but really damn close. I just want to know that I can weigh myself on any standard scale. My next goal will be set for weeks from now. I want to go back and visit friends at school for a weekend and I'm planning a trip when the weather doesn't suck, when I (hopefully) have a job and have saved up money, when I'm drinking alcohol again, when I'm eating more carbs (so I have more options to eat while I'm there) and on a date when there's a big to-do going on around there.

Um, well, I've been sticking to my diet. I started a full time job and am on my feet 40 hours a week now so I haven't been able to exercise as frequently because my body's not used to being on my feet that long for that often. Not to mention because of my disability it hurts my feet to stand for that long so exercising is difficult when I come home, I haven't been really losing, but I haven't been gaining either, and even though I'm not losing actual pounds, my waistline is getting smaller. w00t!

I work at a Great American Bagel in O'Hare International airport. So it's basically fast food but on bagels instead of buns located in the busiest airport in the U.S, and it only pays minimum wage...sigh. Not really what I want to be doing, but nobody would hire me. It's alright though I'm just doing it to save money while I'm losing all this weight because I went to school for a theater degree and now I'm trying to create a certain image for myself before I start my career (one of the many reasons I wanted to lose all this weight) and there's no sense in being broke while I'm doing that. It may be minimum wage but 1) I'm lucky to even have a job and 2) thankfully living at home with my mother for now will allow me to save most of it. Now onward to the next part of this post.
In one of my last updates about my weight and the progress toward my goals I had set my next goal for April 13th because I thought there was going to be an event I wanted to attend that weekend but it turns out it's a weekend earlier than I thought it was going to be. But this is okay because...
I'VE ALREADY REACHED THAT GOAL! 2 weeks ahead of my original intended date and one week ahead of what was going to be my new goal date until I found out this morning I had already reached it. I lost 18 pounds in March! Holy crap! So, now it's time to set a new short term goal.

I haven't updated in a while. This topic was getting dangerously close to the bottom.
Anyway, I lost 12 pounds in April. I now weigh 257 pounds. Also, as of New Year's Eve I was wearing size 46 jeans, on top of that they were tight on me. I now am floating between 42s and 40s. I also wore size 3x shirts and am now down to an XL. I have 12 pounds to lose in 6 weeks. w000t!
Drop to 300 pounds by January 24th (Fission Mailed; 303 lbs)

Edit: I forgot I was going to add this too. It seems after about three and a half months the weight loss has finally (naturally) slowed down. Being the persistent and dedicated person I am, I'm going to now change my diet even more and exercise even harder and more often...I hope this works out for the best. Due to this change, I think this blog might now shift a little more toward my diet and exercise regimen as well as the usual weight update. Also, I'm starting to get saggy...I need to lift and tone more. That's all for now.

Remember in my last update I said I was going to workout harder and change up my diet again? It seems to be working! I've officially crossed the line between medically obese and medically overweight! I now weigh 253 pounds. So, I've decided I'm going to make (at least one, but probably) a few entries about my journey so far, this one being about my diet. The best way I can think of is to make lists of the different versions of Smithy's diet starting with:
Diet 1.0: Pre weight loss
Before I got on this whole weight loss kick I would pretty much eat whatever I want, whenever I wanted. There was a lot of junk food eating, a lot of sugar, a lot of soda/pop/whateveryoucallit, and a lot of late night eating at 24 hour establishments such as Denny's and Ihop. This is all I knew of life until...
Diet 2.0: Beginning stages
This is where I started Atkins. Almost every morning I would have 2 scrambled eggs with cheese, 3 sausage links, 2 strips of bacon, a giant glass of water, and my vitamins. On the mornings I didn't eat that I would have a 3 egg omelet with lots of veggies, cheese, and some type of meat, a glass of water, and my vitamins. I would then make sure to eat a total of 6 meals a day, all being some sort of meat and usually involving some sort of veggies, cheese, and a dressing or sauce of some sort. I also made sure to eat at least one salad a day, to eat my last meal 3-4 hours before I went to bed, and to drink water with every meal. In fact water is almost the only thing I've been drinking since January 3rd besides the occasional diet pop/soda/etc. and/or the alcohol I have sparingly drank throughout the past 4 months. I stuck with this exact diet for about 6 weeks. In retrospect, although I was losing weight, this was not a very healthy diet. This is why it was imperative that I switch to...
Diet 2.5: Evolution
Every two weeks after the initial 6 weeks I would add another food group. Each group containing slightly more carbs than the last until it evolved into a diet like this:
Meal 1: 2 Scrambled eggs with cheese, 3 sausage links, 2 pieces of whole wheat toast with light jam, whole milk, water, vitamins
Meal 2: Carrot sticks and ranch
Meal 3: A salad with some sort of meat and cheese usually involving ranch dressing, water
Meal 4: Berries and nuts, water
Meal 5: Meat and veggies (usually red meat), water
Meal 6: A piece of fruit (usually an apple with a little bit of natural peanut butter spread on it)
There was still quite a bit of dressing, cheese, and other cholesterol inducing foods involved and about the middle of April I realized my weight loss was hitting a plateau so a few days ago I started my new and improved...
Diet 3.0: New dawn, New day, New life, New me
Here's an example:
Meal 1: Oatmeal made with skim milk and blackberries, 2 egg whites, an orange, vitamins, water
Meal 2: Carrot sticks and light ranch
Meal 3: Tuna salad over romaine lettuce made with light mayo (delicious recipe to come in the next post)
Meal 4: PB&J on whole wheat made with light jam and natural peanut butter
Meal 5: Chicken breast and Peas
Meal 6: An apple
There's the evolution of my diet and how I pretty much trained myself to eat healthier.
tl;dr-I'm no longer considered medically obese and I'm eating much healthier now.

Smithy's Tuna surprise
Ingredients
2 cans of Tuna
1 small apple (chopped)
4 oz. grapes (cut in half)
1.5 oz dried cranberries
1 large celery stick
1/2 of a small onion
1/2 cup of peas
1/4 cup chopped pecans
3 tablespoons of light mayo
Directions
Mix all ingredients in a bowl and then eat however you like (over lettuce, on a sandwich, etc). This makes a lot so portion it out how you will and then store leftovers in the fridge. It's really good and I have some in my fridge right now.

Willis, it seems like every other time you post, I need to look up a word that's in the OED or Urban Dictionary but not both.

I've officially crossed the line between medically obese and medically overweight! I now weigh 253 pounds.
Say, if a weight of 253 lbs gives you a BMI less than 29, you must be at least six-and-a-half feet tall. At five-seven, I'm a little jealous!

"Abstainer,
n. A weak person who yields to the temptation of denying himself a pleasure."
Oh, look, you said you were six-five in the very first post. So I'm also a little inattentive.
---
"Abstainer, n. A weak person who yields to the temptation of denying himself a pleasure."
It's not less than 29. It's like 29-point-something, but according to wii fit that's overweight.
---
Smithy/Freepizza/Heydude/Monty/Shadowspy
Yes. Continuing the theme of inattentiveness, I originally wrote "no greater than 29", then thought "That's sort of clumsy; I might as well just say 'less than 30'" but didn't finish the job of changing it. I didn't even think of non-integral BMIs.
