Am I wrong for thinking that is that case? It's been that way for every person I've lived with, and including dorming that's a lot of different kinds of people.

I think door closed has the connotation of "knock if something important comes up" with "important" dependent on the vibe you get from the roommate. But otherwise, yeah.

Well, yeah, knocking if important, of course.

I've only known one person who this rule didn't seem to hold for, and that was the brother of a roommate I had a couple years back. He was my friend too, of course, and a fairly good one, but it was jarring when I'd hear him come over to visit (my room was right next to our front door) and he'd just pop open my door to look for me to say hello.

In retrospect, I can't decide if that's him adhering to old Filipino traditions of greeting people in their house (which his family is a fairly traditional one) or him just not getting 'hey if my door is closed please knock first.'
