Melody similarities?

Compare the chorus to "Green Green" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ct2E4kHzhLM
To the chorus of "Witch Doctor" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mkMYyFZw_jE
To the first part of the overworld level music of Super Mario World http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VH8mQRXemuo

Am I crazy, or do they all bear some sort of similarity?

I didn't notice that until now, but it's not surprising. Music is a discrete combinatorial system after all, and music theoretic principles filter out the structures that don't "work" musically. Essentially, this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JdxkVQy7QLM

Seth: What are you making?
Evan: I'm just drilling holes. Last two weeks, **** it.

In related news, after I saw that rant I can no longer enjoy this song from one of my favorite bands: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yS_DcqPkEYM

Willis, it seems like every other time you post, I need to look up a word that's in the OED or Urban Dictionary but not both.

if you study theory, you'll find out that there're essentially a finite amount of chord progressions that are generally pleasing to listen to. this is because every progression adheres to a particular scale. if you have the time,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Musical_scale
tl;dr- music is like legos, and while you can build however you want, it'll only be relatively good when put together a certain way

this is why music from particular regions sound similar; ie you can differentiate western pop from celtic folk because they "sound" like what you'd expect them to. that's why it pisses me off when people say spout s*** like, "this artist doesn't fit into any genre" or "i only listen to x type of music" because it's quite literally all the same and all label-able. the preference/taste lies not in the genre or composition of the music, but the timbre of the instrumentation and the presentation. hence why some people say "generic pop artist sucks" but listen to "underground band" even though musically they're practically identical.

this can also be used to explain why so many pop songs follow variants of the I V vi IV pattern. aside from the vids already posted, if you scroll down to "Three-Chord Progressions" you'll notice that a f***ton more songs than you'd like to admit use similar patterns.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chord_progression

like AMan, i feel like i can't enjoy certain songs/music anymore. however, because i discovered the patterns while learning and composing music, i think i've gotten over it faster and have moved on to learning to appreciate the different melodies people can create over the progressions.

A couple months ago my younger cousins came over and one of them was really proud to show me that she could play "I'm Yours" by Jason Mraz on the guitar. I told her, "Oh, that means you know how to play a lot of songs now." She asked me what I meant. I told her to just keep playing "I'm Yours"... and proceeded to sing Hey, Soul Sister, I'm Yours, No One, and Don't Stop Believing over it. Blew her and my aunties' and uncles' minds. My friends do stuff like that when we're just jamming out though.
