I told you I teach animals!
Well, no, I don't think animals know how to steal.
Maybe crows?

Oh my. Do you know who, or were you only able to infer that the thief was one of your students?

But, hey, at least you have... had an iPad!

We have a primary suspect based on movement, time of loss, and tracking of the iPad via Find My iPhone, but we don't have enough evidence to follow up.

How accurate is the tracking on it? If the answer is "very" you could always steal it back.

I like this idea. In fact, why not use "Find my iPad" while around the kid and see if he brings it BACK to class.
Returning to the scene of the crime, so to speak.

Yeah, definitely use Find my iPad and get it back.

Seth: What are you making?
Evan: I'm just drilling holes. Last two weeks, **** it.
Kids are savvier than Find My iPad, which 1) only works while the iPad is on, and 2) can be overwritten (as well as all settings) by connecting it to a computer. when I tracked it I got a 6-block radius in Spanish Harlem before I eventually lost the signal permanently.

Oh, geeze, that sucks. I figure the school doesn't have the sort of insurance that would cover that? Which I'm not certain exists?

Willis, it seems like every other time you post, I need to look up a word that's in the OED or Urban Dictionary but not both.

Actually it looks like I might be able to put in a claim of some sort.

I wouldn't recommend putting a claim in and saying you used it for work. One of my teachers in high school had his car broken into and his laptop was stolen. He put a claim in and it was going through fine until he mentioned that he used it for work.
They dropped it entirely.

Wait, so they would compensate him if it was just a personal item but not if he used it for work?

That doesn't make any sense to me.

I can see how the reasoning might be "if you're using it for work, it is the school's responsibility to replace it from their own equipment funds." Or perhaps the policy only covers personal property but not school owned property (which might be a different policy or might be uncovered).
