Now as you all (probably) know, I'm Filipino. But did you also know that the Philippines was under Spanish rule and colonization for the better part of about 400 years? Over that time, many people from Europe came over to the Philippines, for various reasons.

Today I read my Lolo’s (grandfather's) story that he wrote about his and his family’s involvement in World War II in the Philippines. I found out a number of surprising things, like how he had a horse named Pandy, and the Philippine guerrilla forces tried taking his horse but he wanted to keep it, thus starting his enlistment into the war. Well, there were other reasons, like his older brother's involvement with US forces, but he really loved his horse, too.

I also found out that his mom was half German. Which makes him 1/4th German, my mom 1/8th German, and me 1/16 German.

This entire time I’d been under the impression that the part of me that was German blood was actually much less, but apparently it isn’t. Combine that with the Portuguese guy who gave my dad’s side of the family our last name ages ago, and… I guess I’m surprisingly European.

Well good job avoiding genetic diseases, right? Like you're never gonna get hemophilia.

Willis, it seems like every other time you post, I need to look up a word that's in the OED or Urban Dictionary but not both.

Speaking of names, Jon, are you a Jonathan, or is "Jon" your legal name?

I don't know much of my own family history, but apparently I'm part-Russian, part-Polish, part-English, and part-Irish. I'm practically a United Nations… of white people.

^I'm in a similar boat (English, Irish, Dutch, German, and a few others), though I'm supposedly a very small fraction Cherokee as well, definitely not enough to get any benefits, though I think my dad could have, if I remember right.

My legal name is actually Jonathan-(my dad's name) ; with a hyphen. I went through my life thinking that I had two middle names, when in fact my first middle name was actually a part of my first name. Go figure.
