Is it just me, or does every cover of a Bob Dylan song eclipse the original?

Bob Dylan's "Masters of War":

Mountain's cover:

Even Guns 'n' Roses got in on the action. Dylan's "Knockin' on Heaven's Door":

And the miraculously slightly less insipid Guns 'n' Roses cover:

Okay so I guess I only have two examples, because my other really good one is also by Mountain (their Highway 61 Revisited), and Billy Joel's cover of The Times They Are A-Changin' is indistinguishable. And the original is pretty baller. But still what's with that phenomenon.

Willis, it seems like every other time you post, I need to look up a word that's in the OED or Urban Dictionary but not both.

You forgot "All Along the Watchtower", probably the most important example.

It's not just you. Here's a list.

The only other one I knew was "One More Cup of Coffee" and I am pleasantly surprised to see its position on this list.

Peripherally related: in my opinion, Elton John's cover of "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" beats the original.

I saw Bob Dylan in concert last year. It was just kinda sitting there wondering what the hell he was saying for an hour and a half.

Then after cheering for 10 minutes, he FINALLY came back out and did Like A Rolling Stone.

Best $5 ever spent.

Actually I just thought of All Along the Watchtower now (although the BSG cover was what popped into my head, not Hendrix's. If it's really a cover, since I thought Dylan wrote it and was like "nah, you'll do a better job with this").

The Byrds cover of Mr. Tambourine Man is a whole lot better than the original.

Though the I'm Not There soundtrack provides quite a few counter examples to this theory.
