There's an episode of an old cop drama with a scene where the detective chides a clothing store owner for having all the hangers facing the same way on a clothing rack. Apparently, you're supposed to alternate them so a thief can't pick them up and grab many at once. I've never actually checked to see if this is done in clothing stores.

Plus often the sizes are listed on the hangers, and you can't display them if they are hung like that.

I don't shop much, but I usually notice if two items are facing the opposite way. Like Jace said, it's a big pain when looking for your size.

Hey so here's an etiquette question: If you want to try on a shirt at a clothing store, like a dress shirt, and it's one of the ones with dozens of pins in it, do you have to re-pin them? Or is it just considered a breach of etiquette to try those on?

I think most clothing stores with a dressing room has an attendant who will take the clothing for you if you decide not to buy it.
As for smaller stores without a dressing room attendant...I don't think anyone cares if you don't pin it back.

Don't pin it back, I'd say. Unless you are a master of pinning. But if you're like me, the end result will look sloppy and reflect poorly on the store.
If I tried clothes on, I'll hang them back up where I got them. If they're tricky, I'll put them wherever they are supposed to be found for an attendant.
