I like cupcakes, but they have to be good. They've been the hot pastry item recently, but so many places focus so much on the frosting that they ignore the cake, which is a pretty vital thing. Cupcakes shouldn't be frosting delivery devices.

My favorite one right now is from a place called Molly's that has cookie dough in the center of the cupcakes. In fact, based on how I went last night and got different flavors, it seems like all of their cupcakes have something moist in the center (the lemon meringue has a dollop of custard in the center, another had peanut butter), which I bet helps keep the cake moist.

This is the recipe at least. I tend not to like cupcakes usually as I find the same problem as you do. I never did make the crumbles on top like the last step, though.

I'm gave up on tendy cupcakes with the demise of Buttercup Bakery, one of which was on like 72nd. It is now a "red velvet" only the red velvet sucks. I tried a crumbs, but yeah--gross cake and frosting to semicompensate.

I'm intrigued by gooey center talk though.

If you're ever in LA, give Sprinkles a try. They're pretty popular, and they even have a cupcake vending machine outside of their store that's restocked every day.

I prefer muffins for the exact reason you said- the frosting is always too much for me. Since I started running in high school, I couldn't deal with really sugary stuff. I mean, I almost threw up after eating a slice of cake because I could feel the amount of sugar in it.

But, I've never really been a fan of cupcakes (or most dessert items really), because of all the sugar. But I love muffins, especially blueberry ones...sweet sweet blueberry...

Hooray for muffins! I myself am a devotee of the humble corn muffin.

Cupcakes aren't my favorite pastry. I simply haven't had many that compared to a good cinnamon bun, or a good cookie, for that matter. I prefer ordinary cake, although that's hard to find good because of the very problem of overemphasis on frosting that James mentioned.
