I remember reading a dumb factoid that the pop music you were into at age fifteen will set your musical tastes for the rest of your life for [reason].

Well, what if you weren't into any music at that age? And nothing in particular.

My ability to enjoy pop from most generations has increased greatly over the past few years. Current pop artist I like, Kesha, Lady Gaga, Nicki Minaj (It takes real talent to say the same word three times in a rap song and call it a rhyme.

And to make that song better. It features rap from A Tribe Called Quest. I thought I recognized that, had to look it up on Wikipedia.

I'm sure that, since we both know it, it was from Cracked.

Whoa, it was surprisingly easy to find, too. http://www.cracked.com/article_19722_7-scientific-reasons-youll-turn-out-just-like-your-parents.html

Took me like 15 seconds.

Here's the actual research article:

Harrison, J., & Ryan, J. (2010). Musical taste and ageing. Ageing and Society, 30, 649–669. doi:10.1017/S0144686X09990778

The DOI URL is then:

http://dx.doi.org/10.1017/S0144686X09990778

So far as I can tell, what the article says is neither what the Cracked article thinks it says nor what Wil recalled the Cracked article as saying it says. What it actually says is that musical tastes expand with age up to about age 55, then decline with age. And the top genres among the oldest folks of different generations are "remarkably consistent":

A second important finding is the remarkably consistent preferences among the three oldest groups (55–64, 65–74 and 75+ years). While there were minor variations in their ranking, the same five genres were the most preferred genres in 1982 and 1992, namely hymns/gospel, country, mood/easy listening, big band, and classical/chamber. In 2002 among those aged 55–64 years, rock replaced big band, and had become more popular among those aged 65–74 years, being in sixth place just behind classical/chamber music (31.8% versus 32.1%). This was the first year in which rock had a sizeable following among the three older age groups. To detail this remarkable consistency, in 1982 the top five preferred genres for those aged 75+ years were in rank order: hymns/gospel (53.7%), country (46.0%), big band (26.6%), mood/easy listening (23.5%), and classical/chamber (22.7%). For the same age group in 1992, the top five were: hymns/gospel (52.5%), country (45.8%), big band (45.5%), mood/easy listening (35.7%), and classical/chamber (29.1%), and in 2002 the rank order was: big band (36.9%), country (35.7%), hymns/gospel (34.7%), classical/chamber (31.0%) and mood/easy listening (27.5%).

Did I mention that it really ticks me off how the Cracked article pretends that these findings are a natural implication of those stupid neuroscience articles they cite? My goodness, the mass media adores neuroscience. You just show them some fMRI figures and say "Dopamine!" and they'll believe your study proves whatever you say it does.

Yeah, but shoddy coverage of science news isn't limited to Cracked, nor is shoddy Cracked coverage limited to science:

My B for quoting a thing I didn't remember any details of; I seriously would have clarified "and this came from Cracked, so it's probably not real" much sooner.

(Disclaimer: I love Cracked even in their aggressive wrongness.)

But Cracked doesn't cite the research article; they cite this guy's interpretation of it (http://aginginaction.com/2010/05/musical-tastes-aging/) and they do so fairly accurately.

Man, I feel as if you posted that link (and I read it and enjoyed it) years ago. But the article is less than a year old. And I don't see the URL anywhere in Wisterwood, although I've been archiving PMS since before this article was written. Figure that one out.

But Cracked doesn't cite the research article; they cite this guy's interpretation of it (http://aginginaction.com/2010/05/musical-tastes-aging/) and they do so fairly accurately.

I disagree that the interpretation (even of the interpretation) is accurate. The Aging in Action article says roughly what I said above; there's nothing about the old retaining the tastes they had as young'uns, which is what the Cracked article seems to be implying, and the Aging in Action piece makes clear that the decline effect starts in old age ("older adults" being a euphemism for old people common in psychology), whereas the Cracked article makes it sounds like it starts when you're thirty.

Okay, it turns out I kind of like Foo Fighters now.

I thought I only liked Everlong, and I still maintain that I only like Everlong enough to sit down and say "I would like to listen to Everlong." But I listened to most of the rest of that album and it was p okay.

Pretty sure this is the second time you've kinda liked the Foo Fighters. . .

Yeah, and if you're anything like me it never will. They're amusing for about 35 minutes or so before you find yourself wondering why Dave didn't stick to drums. He's on par with a good karaoke night singer that has a hell of a production staff behind him to make it sound good.

Notice how he's never done an Unplugged (yet another 90's reference)?

I guess I was pretty into Smash Mouth in the 90s.

You're a New Yorker. "Wicked" (not the musical) was banished to the depths of Boston. We say "mad".

I mean, I used to say wicked and mad a lot, but then I only said mad, for whatever reason. Turns out it's a Boston vs. New York thing.

Using "mad" as an adverb is a pet peeve of mine. It sounds mad illiterate.
