The 2013 PMS Awards

Topic List
#001 | Kodiologist |
People of PMS, I have courageously taken it upon myself the run the PMS awards this year. All PMSians are eligible for the following categories. You may nominate two people per category for up to eleven categories, but you may not nominate anybody whose User ID is congruent to yours modulo 6. Nominees are required to amass seven votes for nomination for every four against; then, voting will commence according to the Kemeny–Young method, with ties broken via Paper Mario speedruns performed either by the candidate or a randomly-selected voter (candidate's choice, but before the voter has been selected). Those with a 3KL moderation, warning, or suspension within the preceding six months or ban within the preceding year (two years for LUEshi-related offenses) as of election day are not eligible to vote, barring an executive order from a lead moderator. All nominations must be submitted as slips of paper inside fortune cookies mailed to my residence, and all votes must be submitted as Minecraft screenshots.

Award Categories
• Most frequent poster
• PMSian with the most rapidly changing signature
• PMSian with the most "b"s in the ROT13-encoded form of his username
• Least pigmented PMSian
• Greatest longitude of residence
• Most Velcro shoes owned
• Best Perl programmer
• Smartest Frog Blaster
• Best-dressed doctoral student
• Most newlines before sig divider
• Most Kodiological
• Least likely to be freepizza

Such a sick post I got the herpes just reading it.

But on the other hand, Alex, as can be readily seen, is a very serviceable substitute Travis.

I nominate James for Most Likely to Deservesly Take Over the PMS Awards.
#005 | Kylo Force |
I'm not sure you can be eligible for both "Most Velcro shoes owned" and "Best-dressed doctoral student." Those awards seem mutually exclusive to me.

Well, you see, as the only doctoral student, I am not only necessarily the best-dressed, but also the strongest, the prettiest, the most courageous, and the best at croquet.

Are you really the only doctoral student here? That surprises me.

Where's overduegalaxy when you need him? I bet he's a doctoral student.
#008 | Kodiologist |
overduegalaxy has no appearances (or even, up until this point, mentions) in Wisterwood, and while I recognize the username, I don't remember anything about him.

My boyfriend has been telling me I should go for a PhD. (Or rather, I have it in me to do one.) Clearly I need to just so I can steal those superlatives from Kodi.

That's a weaker compliment than it might sound. While getting into PhD programs can certainly be difficult, once you're in, graduating is mostly a matter of endurance. The doctoral student's real challenge is getting enough done during those four or five years to be competitive on the job market.

What he said.

If in life 90% of everything is showing up, in grad school 100% of everything is showing up.

Willis, it seems like every other time you post, I need to look up a word that's in the OED or Urban Dictionary but not both.

Not to say that you shouldn't get that PhD if you find your current life unfulfilling and think you would prefer academic math life (or whatever you're looking at).

Well, really he was just talking about my ability/approach to new math problems, which would be useful in math research. (Which is a bit different than other research.)
