Is Earthbound a relatively tough game? I tried playing it on an emulator and it basically kicked my butt. I've also heard that pirated copies of the game somehow wind up harder than the real deal so maybe that was it?

I'd say it's tough by the coddling standards of most RPGs, like the Final Fantasies, but I didn't need to grind much after the early game (before the first major boss). I got stuck in Fourside because of a puzzle, not because of a fight.

I enjoyed Mother 3, but couldn't really get into EarthBound. Mother 3 does a bit of a variation on action commands; you have to tap a to the rhythm of the music to get extra hits.

Earthbound is pretty tough in the beginning because you only have Ness and the first major boss serves as a wake up call if you haven't been leveling adequately. It becomes much easier along the way as enemy difficulty balances with you gaining more party members and your characters becoming stronger.
That being said, I bought the Mother 1+2 GBA port when I was in Japan thinking I could use my basic Japanese reading skills to help me power through it like I powered through a Japanese copy of Pokemon LeafGreen... yeah, that didn't work out so well.
