Sorry, I was in Virginia.
So, in the scene, the new students starting the year at Crunchem Hall are all nervous because it's so ominous, and the older students are dancing around trying to warn them off. They sing the verse and then one of the younger students says he was supposed to learn his alphabet, so when they repeat the verse, the put in blocks in the big iron gate corresponding to each line (dancing on top of them).
