I'm used to saying "Hi, it's Kodi", sometimes with an appended "Arfer", when I call somebody. With the rise of cellphones and their internal phone books, is caller ID universal enough that identifying myself is redundant?

Pretty much. I do it often and there are certain people who will say, 'Yeah, I know.' Sort of embarassing.

Yeah, my phone conversations now usually start at "hey what's up", or something similar.

Yeah, it pretty much is. If they dunno who it is, they'll simply ask, which is a rarity. I've witnessed friends have conversations on the phone, hang up, and say that they had absolutely no idea who they were talking to.

Of course, if you know the other person does not have your phone number, then by all means do what you do.

I see it's as I feared. Of course, all this makes it pretty annoying to have a landline without caller ID. I once spoke to someone for several minutes who didn't identify herself, and finally when she said "Just tell your mother I called, okay?" I said "Sure, but I have no idea who you are."

Well, think of it this way. When I see my friend Matt is calling me, I pick up the phone and see "Hi Matt!" If I don't know who is calling me, I won't say a name, and often will phrase it as a question, such as "Hello?" So maybe you can use that to help you just whether to say who is calling.

Of course, not everyone answers the phone as I do.

I like that Jace's post can be read "If I don't know who is calling me" or "If I-don't-know-who is calling me".

Yeah, it varies. Now if you're calling somewhere where formality might be required, sure, announce your name. Even if they say "Yeah, I know it's you," it was probably better safe than ruining a job interview.

I will announce my name to someone if I don't think they have my number yet (like a coworker who I'm calling for the first time) but you probably needn't do it more than that. In a contrived scenario where I specifically know someone is driving but I need to contact them, and I don't speak with them enough that my voice is instantly recognizable, I'd also use a preface with my name, in case they could not check the caller ID.
