Well, I'm getting laid off soon.

I considered turning this into a dirty joke topic where the topic was 'Well, I'm getting laid...' and then the first line was going to be '...off soon' and then I realized I was above that kind of humor.

My boss informed me that my last day of work will be August 19th. I applied for another job at the university today. If that doesn't go through, I think I'm going to visit my grandparents in the Philippines.

...And then figure out the rest of my life from there.

Did their money dry up or something? What happened?

We're at the end of a 6 year grant cycle and news from the state has been coming extremely slowly about whether or not our department will be a participant in the next grant or not. Until that news finally comes, my entire immediate department (which, including me, consists only of three people) is in jeopardy. The three of us have been talking about this possibility for awhile now so I wasn't exactly surprised or caught off guard with the news. I'm not even that happy/unhappy about it; I'm truthfully pretty neutral.

If I can't get a job at the university, I might try offering private tutoring services in my hometown like I did after I finished high school, only now I actually have the credentials to back it up and I won't undercharge people for it.

And keep singing and dancing, you know, to keep myself sane.

Two things real quick.

The first is that no one should ever feel themselves above that kind of humor. Humor can pull you through the worst of times, especially crass (low) easy to find jokes.

Secondly, be happy that you have that much notice. Nearly two months? You've got a lot of time to put the feelers out to other schools (doesn't necessarily have to be in your current state) and see if maybe they have the desire and the funding to bring everyone from your department over and start it up themselves.

You're getting unemployment right?

Also: you have that much more experience than somebody entering the workforce for the first time, so chin up!

Willis, it seems like every other time you post, I need to look up a word that's in the OED or Urban Dictionary but not both.

…no one should ever feel themselves above that kind of humor.

I dunno, man. There's something to be said for keeping clean. It takes more skill to be genuinely funny without breaking taboos, and it's nice to avoid the danger of upsetting people when you only mean to make them laugh. In other words, I liked the Wayside School series better than Catch-22.

Yes, I have just argued in favor of inoffensiveness, and I know this proves that I am the worse of philistines.

Not that sacred cows don't need to die; it's just that, for example, to make sexual puns is merely to beat a dead sacred horse.

That's what she said.

Then she's a plagiarist.

More like to beat off a dead horse.

Okay, that was pretty bad, I see what you mean about being above it.

Ok, umm... so I don't really know what happened to this topic, but I thought it would be appropriate for me to check in.

First of all, thanks everyone for the tips, and yes, it looks like I should be eligible for unemployment benefits should it come to that. Considering I am -extremely- fortunate that I have over a month's notice, I'm confident that I should be able to find something. The HR specialist for our department spoke with me this past week about different things, transfer of benefits, etc, and also gave me tips about when the department will be rehiring for positions. She met me way back when I was a student working for the department over a summer back in 2008 so we know each other fairly well professionally; she gave me some good leads on where I might be able to find openings coming up pretty soon. We'll see how those turn out.

Also, I just want to reiterate, I've always seen all of these TV shows and movies about people who find out that they're getting laid off and overwhelming waves of emotion come over them; it really isn't like that for me. I think it's a combination of things; I really did see it coming so it's not like it came as a huge surprise and if anything else this is actually a good opportunity for me either to find something even more fulfilling than the work that I was doing or just to take some time to do some things I haven't yet had an opportunity to.

So again, thanks everyone for the support, and I'll be sure to let you all know what develops.

Got an e-mail back from the Office of Admissions. saying that they want to see me this Thursday. I guess it's for an interview? They never really used that word though, but assuming the process is like when I interviewed for a similar job with them last year, it will be. It's actually the job I was talking about in this topic: http://arfer.net/pms/topics/58572171 ...except that was an internship and this is the real deal.

I got that e-mail about an hour ago and for reasons I cannot fathom, I feel like it's going too fast. It's almost like, for some twisted reason, I was looking forward to being unemployed. "First World Problems" indeed.
