Ugh, why are packages only delivered during work hours?

This seems like the stupidest thing. I am not home then! People who work and are therefore more likely to get packages are not home (generally)! Why not have evening shifts for residential deliveries? I know probably most deliveries go to businesses, but if the could somehow sort by residential and commercial that would make much more sense.

At least the USPS has a key to our door so they can leave stuff inside. FedEx and UPS are terrible.

Well yeah, businesses and then traditional families (the wife at home) work fine with this schedule. Nothing's really geared towards single full-time workers. I imagine it's an old business model that persists despite growing problems.

That made me look up what percentage of women were homemakers and I was surprised to see the figure I saw was 40%, I thought it would be lower.

So did I. I guess it's lower for urban areas in particular.

I too am surprised that there are that many.

Maybe they were dual-classing. Like "I'm a homemaker. And a ranger."

Willis, it seems like every other time you post, I need to look up a word that's in the OED or Urban Dictionary but not both.

That percentage depresses me, yeah. So does the word "traditional." :( I'd like to know what the survey demographics were. Was it just married females in America?

As for packages, my guess would be that it's cheaper for any business to run during normal work hours. Delivering packages in the evening would mean facilities would have to be open longer and more personnel hired. With USPS facing bankruptcy (one of their proposals to save money is to stop delivering on Saturdays, so I'm sure that will cause even more frustration!), though, it's possible FedEx or UPS will try to step it up and take over some business by offering longer hours, Sunday delivery, etc. One can dream?

On a more controversial note, when I was searching for data, I found this site and died a little inside: http://www.momof9splace.com/homemaker.html

Why does "traditional" depress you? It doesn't seem like a loaded word to me.

God’s plan for the woman is homemaking. There is no higher goal that women may desire or achieve. There is no nobler calling for her upon earth.

[shudder]

Have you ever seen this, Kate? Fortunately, it's probably a hoax.

Most of it: lols

The part about not greeting him with complaints when he comes home: kinda nice. I like to have like 5 minutes to just sit and chill before I have to face anything.

So I called them about it, to see if I could arrange something, like a pick up from somewhere that's not 7 miles from my home (since they have stores and depots much closer). I could not manage that, but they said they'd make a note to deliver after 5.

The first two attempts had been at 1 PM. Today, when they should have delivered after 5, it was at 10 AM.
