A is for Alex. I always find it weird when people address me by name. I almost never get called Alex. I don't feel that I fully identify with the name.

Is it weird to you when people use your name? I prefer to just be talked to without being addressed first.

Hmm. I'm sure I didn't used to feel this way, as I like my name and preferred James to any other thing I could be called. But now most of the time when I am addressed it's as "Mr. Cleveland" (by my students and colleagues [when students are around]) or as "hon" (by my bf) and so I'm not actually called James that much. Sometimes it catches me off-guard.

Yeah, I identify with what you both have said completely.

The really weird thing is that when my gf *does* say "Will," I feel weirdly obligated to say her name back, which is also awkward because I don't really think of her as having her own name.

What's the deal with names?

Willis, it seems like every other time you post, I need to look up a word that's in the OED or Urban Dictionary but not both.

Yeah I've been "honey" for a long time.

A topic about names created by somebody other than me. How about that.

I'm very used to "Kodi" and have no intention of letting future students call me "Dr. Arfer" or (ugh) "Professor". (Have I mentioned how fond I am of the graduate-school convention of everybody going by their first name?) Although, it always surprises me a bit when my parents call me "Kodi" instead of something sillier and more affectionate like "babe" or "Kode" or "Kodi B.".

What do your co-workers and friends call you?

Part of the problem is that she's pronouncing the second "L" and you're still not quite used to that.

I get called "Shai" all the time and still find it kind of weird to have a name sometimes.

Nobody really uses my last name around me, but when I'm ordering at a casual food place and they ask for my name, I tell them it's "Nir." Unless they ask for my first name. I'd rather they didn't, but what am I going to do, lie to them?
Then again, maybe I should just ask them if my last name's okay. I'm sure they wouldn't mind, right?

I agree with everything in this topic. Especially the significant other as not really having their own name experience.
It drives me up the wall when people call me Katie, even though I know that's not really fair. That name just sounds so... flippant. Sorry, Katie's of the world!

This is Kate/Peach972, by the way. I got my name changed again, wooooo.

You know, Will, I've noticed the same thing with my boyfriend. It's like how (once you've said it the first time) you always say "I love you too" back. You just need to respond in the same manner.

(Speaking of names, I think that's the first time I've written your name with two Ls....)

My actual name? Eh, not too often I hear it called I guess. My parents, relatives, and most childhood friends call me by it. Anyone I've met since highschool calls me some other sort of nickname ( one of 30-40+ last I checked).

So...uh...yeah!?
