Seriously. Drop everything you're doing and go see it now. I mean right now. NO I DON'T CARE ABOUT THE BABY-what, you can't drop that? Oh. Take it with you or something then, I dunno.

On a serious note, it was an incredible movie. My friend who I saw it with put it pretty much perfectly- "I had ridiculously high expectations going in, and it exceeded all of them."

So...yeah... See it now. I know I'll probably see it again...or four more times...

...Wait why? My topic title isn't even the longest on the first page!

Anyway, for the Avengers, it's worth it. Trust me Kodi.

I greatly enjoyed the Avengers.

Make sure you stay for the second post-credits sequence. It is entirely worth it.

Willis, it seems like every other time you post, I need to look up a word that's in the OED or Urban Dictionary but not both.

Without a doubt, I may see it.

It was really so good.

I saw this essay about it on John Hodgman's blog, and it makes it seem even better.

First one was pretty lame (oh man did you guess that a villain is threatening earth soon?).

Second one was great.

Well, I mean, who the villain is is somewhat important.

Ehh. You can guess it pretty easily, seeing as Galactus is out (F4 movies) and for marketing reasons they're not going to go with, like, Kang (although I love his interactions with Immortus). They want someone whom longtime fans will recognize and become excited for, and who will be easily recognizable as a threat to movie-only fans. (In this sense, Loki was a really weird choice that was probably forced on them from above on the basis that comic fans would lose it if he wasn't the villain here.)

There are more subtle things as well: As in James's link, the first movie was much more interested in the relationships between the heroes than between the heroes and the villain. And that's in keeping with what makes a good team book in the last ten-fifteen years: Winnick's Outsiders was pitched as "a book with an issue every now and then where they just sit around the clubhouse." The Post-Civil War Thunderbolts (which everyone should read) read more like an HBO serial than an action movie, all about conflicted loyalties and patriarchal madness. The direct models for this movie (Whedon/Cassaday's Astonishing X-Men, Bendis's New Avengers, and in an extended way Morrison's New X-Men) are all character-driven, or at least quip-driven. These aren't runs that produced memorable villains--Morrison did this beautifully by reducing the overarching villain's scale to a literal bacterium. They produced memorable scenes of everyone sitting around the clubhouse.

On top of that, honestly I can only name like three Avengers villains.

Well, Ultron or a Masters of Evil would also be feasible.

You know what's funny is I texted my especially comic-reading buddy apropos of nothing "Okay, how many Avengers villains can you even name? I'm kind of tapping out after Thanos and Immortus (and I think Kang started out as an Iron Man villain)," and he said "Ultron? Masters of evil??"

So I was wrong and it's possible to name four Avengers villains off the top of your head.

Well, the problem with a team like the Avengers is that I feel they often face threats that originated as villains of their constituent members.
