The Geometry of Pasta

Topic List

I got this awesome book a while back and I'm reading through it now. It's essentially a cook book, but it details all the different shapes of pasta you can get, the functions those shapes perform, how it affects how they cook, hold sauce, etc, and them recipes that best suit those particular shapes. It's made me really crave so new, diverse pastas.

Wait, does it like... matter? I guess some shapes hold sauce better, but does it go beyond that?

Willis, it seems like every other time you post, I need to look up a word that's in the OED or Urban Dictionary but not both.

There's also thickness that affects how it cooks, noodles vs tubes vs filled shapes, etc. Also lots of different shapes come from different regions, with different regional specialties.

Wait I found the wikipedia page on that phenomenon.

Don't explain; it will make me feel dumb.

Not quite. Rigatoni isn't homeomorphic to rotini. I don't think there are any pastas with greater Euler characteristic, though, except maybe in alphabet soup.

Oh! And if you construe spaghetti as one-dimensional, you get another topology.

If anything angel hair would be the one-dimensional one.
