Polyamory sounds so nice

Trust, deep love and friendship among a group of people. It's a very beautiful concept. I suppose the more folks the greater risk of instability, but...eh such are things.

Yeah, there are some Heinlein novels that make it sound more like a frat house with communal childrearing.

Willis, it seems like every other time you post, I need to look up a word that's in the OED or Urban Dictionary but not both.

I didn't get a good impression of it from Stranger in a Strange Land, but I wonder if my perceptions would be different now.

Though probably not. I resonate with Jubal so much

Y'know what, I don't think I've heard that many stories of how polyamory has gone for people, and the few I've heard were generally positive (like the one about Wonder Woman's creators) so I'm not gonna knock it until I try it.

Ugh, Heinlein. I remember reading a post on the GameFAQs literature board that went something like "I thought that Stranger in a Strange Land was the best book ever. Then I grew up." I like the sentiment: Heinlein's thinking about sexuality, stripped of all its literary trappings, seems to be the stereotypical adolescent fantasy "We could all delight in each other without end (and get psychic powers) if only we let ourselves go." Just because certain mindless kinds of sexual restraint can be destructive, doesn't mean that sexuality would be perfect if only we got rid of restraint!

I don't have much to say about polyamory, but I do expect that sexuality isn't necessary to achieve

Trust, deep love and friendship among a group of people.
Indeed, it may well hinder it. 'Course, more than trust and cooperation within social groups, which can also make us clannish, I'd like to see trust and cooperation across the entire species. And I'm pretty sure a worldwide orgy is not the way to achieve that.

Jordan, quoting Genesis 2:18: "It is not good for man to be alone."
Fred: "in genesis noah also put two of every animal on a boat when he was 600."

I still love Stranger in a Strange Land. If a worldwide orgy isn't the way to solve all life problems then I just don't know what I'm looking for anymore.

I can't imagine it going all too well. It's hard enough to get two individual people to get along with each other. With multiple lovers, the problems become exponential.

"I always wanted to be somebody, but now I realize I should have been more specific."

Consider this though. The people who would get into a relationship like this, already would need to be both secure and trusting. Security and trust are two of the things that makes relationships difficult in the first place.

To get it to work you would need people who weren't jealous or possessive. Starting with those attitudes puts you on ground less shaky.

Bonobos seem to be doing just fine. I prefer their society over that of the chimps.

Anyways, it weirds me out. I still need convincing that an intimate relationship is anything more than friendship + lust, and so I don't see lust's necessity in creating a harmonious relation of people. Unless it's like concrete, where you've got lime and sand and gravel and then, bam, lust (water) comes in and glues it all together. That I could see. I'll have to give it thought, some day.
