First foray into linux not going as planned.

Putting linux on my laptop is one of those things that I've thought would be a cool project that I couldn't quite justify (I don't think I have the know-how to get any real benefit from it), but I discovered a program that only runs on linux that I've been rather curious about, Polyworld, that has given me sufficient push to try to get this thing going.

I've started with Mint. The DVD was going well enough, once I figured out how to get my laptop (a HP Pavilion dv6) to enter BIOS mode. It took me to a Mint boot screen. Once I started to boot, incomprehensible words flashed across the screen, then the screen turned off (though not the computer)

I'll give it a go tomorrow again, seeing if there's anything else I can figure out to do different. If not, I'll give it another shot with a different distribution.

Any clue what might be wrong, or any alternate distribution suggestions?

I'm not sure what could be going wrong. Installation is always the hardest part. I recommend Kubuntu. Ubuntu should be similarly easy to install, but I'm not crazy about Unity or GNOME 3.

Urgh... I was posting from a Live DVD version of Ubuntu, and actually installing has not gone as planned. :/

And someone on another board told me that since Polyworld has 3D graphics, there was an increased risk of it making my computer unable to boot, which I've decided is something I don't want to risk. I may experiment on an old netbook that I don't worry about much at some point if I get the urge to experiment again, though that probably won't be able to run polyworld.

If I understand what you're saying correctly, that's definitely wrong. Installing an application program will never keep Linux from booting. Conventional applications only get a chance to run after you've logged in, which is long after booting.

If you're getting Ubuntu, I recommend one of the older versions; IMO switching to the new desktop environment was a big mistake as it's missing many of the capabilities of GNOME. I use 10.10, but I recommend 10.04 since it's supported through 2015.
