Does anyone have any app recommendations? After four years with my trusty keyboard-slider phone, I've finally upgraded to a smart phone ... but I don't really know what to put on it.

Android or iOS?

I'm going to guess Android, since most iPhone people are physically unable to refer to their phones with any word but "iPhone". Here's a site to know:

http://f-droid.org/

I recommend these programs:

K-9 Mail: A non-terrible email client.
OsmAnd: Like Google Maps, but free-er (it uses OpenStreetMap), and more usable on a low-end phone (like mine).
Open Manager: A file manager. Useful if you don't already have one.
Text Edit: A text editor. Ditto.
Units: A unit converter that is also a decent general-purpose calculator.
Barnacle WiFi Tether: Lets your computer use your phone's Internet connection. It's not blazing-fast, but when you don't otherwise have Internet, it sure is handy.

Of course, I could always be wrong.

Goodreader is good for having files, reading files, etc. So is the Dropbox app, if you use it.

I really enjoy Songkick. It tells you when artists from your music library are playing shows near you.

You could get Hero Academy and play with Spock, ShadowSpy and I.

It's hard to recommend apps generally without knowing the purpose. I find the Yelp, Seamless, Weather Underground, and Wikipanion apps to be helpful.

SoundHound is really cool for finding songs you don't recognize

HeroAcademy if you want to play with us =D

Twitter and Tumblr apps if you use any of those

Magic Piano is a fun little musical diversion

Hmm...Waze is a very cool collaborative driving directions tool. Not only does it give voice directions, but it can notify you of roadside dangers or police cars.

GasBuddy for finding nearby gas stations and their prices.

Chipotle app for ordering Chipotle before you get to the store. If you like Chipotle, that is.

Pandora app, if you listen to Pandora.

Thanks guys! I've grabbed some of Jace's recommendations and I'll nab some of Spy's later today... Kodi, I'm guessing yours are Droid only?

I'll definitely grab Hero Academy and that Chipotle app, too, though I fear it'll cause me to fall back into a three-burritos-a-week lifestyle.

So far as I know. Few free-software hackers are willing to write for the iPhone because of Apple's control issues.
