My new very favorite Donald Harrington is great at doing these totally effortlessly. E.g. there's one guy in small town rural arkansas who is pathologically too shy to ever speak to a woman. So he and his wife meet because they share some mental connection that allows them to speak wordlessly, and bang through the power of imagination. (Except they go ahead and go for it to procreate.)
So when their kids (who grew up never hearing the two share words) learn where babies come from, they conclude that their parents must never have had sex and deduce that they themselves don't exist.

Willis's anecdote reminds me of a story about Schlemiel of Chelm. I don't remember if it's a folktale or an original creation of Isaac Bashevis Singer. The story is that Schlemiel, before taking a nap midway through a trip to Warsaw, takes off his boots and points them in the direction he's going. While he's asleep, a mischief-maker reverses his boots. So when he gets up and continues his journey, he of course arrives back at Chelm. But rather than realizing he took a wrong term, he reasons he is in a perfect copy of Chelm, which he calls Chelm Two. He doesn't find his own clone because, of course, his clone is away on a trip to Warsaw. Hilarity ensues.
