Got an email from our local blood center and marrow program saying I could be a match for a 52-year old male patient with a certain type of leukemia. Sort of cool to get that call but also sort of nervous. Hoping I can help that man out if I do turn out to be a good match. Apparently they need to do additional testing and it could be up to 60 days before I find out if I am actually a match or not.

So apparently they're just in the pre-screening phase. I have them my permission today to "deeply analyze" the sample from my inner cheek that they got from me back when I signed up, and if it looks good after both that and a medical evaluation, they call me in for a blood sample to verify if we are actually a match.
Assuming we are a match, then there are one of two procedures that can happen. They either harvest the marrow from me directly by making small incisions in my lower back and then snagging it from different parts of my pelvic bone, or they give me drugs that help boost the natural levels of blood stem cells (or something) I'm my blood stream, and then essentially I would go in and they filter that out of my whole blood and give the rest back to me, like an extended blood donation.
While I'm extremely blessed that nobody in my immediate family has had to deal with cancer, the families of many close friends and associates of mine have had cancer of some sort, so this really hits home for me. If I do turn out to be a match, I really hope I can help that patient out.
