So I started rock climbing recently.

My biggest problem with working out has been that it leaves long stretches of my mind doing nothing useful in particular. Rock climbing is nice because it combines exercise with a real problem-solving and intellectual element.

So much fun! I love rock climbing, especially outdoors. It's a great workout. But, if I'm lucky, I'll go like...once a year.

Do you do like a typical wall (which emphasizes lower body strength) or something different like cargo nets (which emphasize upper body)?

Mostly top rope on walls and the occasional bouldering. I've only gone a few times so far, but some of my friends are really into it so the opportunity to go is fairly frequent.

Is it pretty technical or do you just kinda climb? I used to climb trees quite a bit and I feel like I'd enjoy rock climbing if I could just skip the ropes and all that stuff.

Once you get used to how the ropes are secured you can just kind of climb. Of course, you spend half the time belaying someone else while they climb, which I guess is kind of technical but is also easy.

Bouldering is just straight up climbing with no rope. That's pretty easy to get into, but the climbs get challenging fast.

Belaying is kinda fun, and like...really important.

I almost severely injured myself on my first climb because the kid belaying me was just running the rope up and down between the pulley. If I fell, I was going straight to the ground. They didn't secure it until I was halfway up the wall (somewhere between 15-20 feet). When I repelled down everyone was like "YOU ALMOST DIED!!!" and I was like "Say wha?..."

So...yeah, important stuff...

I guess the parts that appeal to me would be the solitude and the challenge, so it sounds like I'm probably better off bouldering. Wish there were some natural things around here to climb on but Michigan's pretty low on mountains.

I climbed a rock wall today at field day for my school. My performance today compared to the last time I climbed one 2 years ago reminded me how out of shape I am.

Also, I'm pretty sure this gash on my leg is from that day.

Cool stuff. I haven't done a lot of climbing but it is fun. Back when I worked in Nevada we got out a few times to scramble over some boulders. Not real climbing but I actually prefer it-- I like the idea of moving quickly over uneven terrain.

Where I work in Michigan I spend a decent amount of time belaying kids up a 60' wall. Bizarrely I've only had the opportunity to climb it once. I did so. It was actually a little scary when I looked down from 60 feet up.

Okay, I just did this awesome 45-minute rock scramble called The Labyrinth. It had caves to squeeze through, crevices to climb, uneven boulders to precariously climb over, risking tumbling to your doom. It was amazing.

My aunt had a boyfriend who loved rock-climbing. He died from a fall. Risky rock-climbing might look cool, but it ain't worth your life.
