I'm really excited about Soylent.

Not to be confused with Soylent Green, Soylent is a beverage mix meant to serve as a general-purpose replacement for ordinary food. It's like Kool-Aid, but scienceyer!

As the Register points out, Rob Rhinehart et al. are making some ridiculous claims. For one thing, all those blood tests the beta testers have taken don't cut it: claims that Soylent makes you healthy are only appropriately tested with experiments that examine health outcomes, like cancer and heart disease. Also, I'm a little worried about those "nootropics". Food and drugs should be kept separate. In summary, I'm not going to be the first person to subsist entirely on Soylent.

All this said, I'm really happy Soylent is so popular, because I badly want a good general-purpose food like this to exist. Imagine: no kitchen, no grocery shopping, no deciding what to make for dinner. You drink a glass or pop a pill and you're done. Soylent might not be The Dream yet, considering all the caveats, but it's a step in the right direction. I hope the world realizes from the success of the crowdfunding campaign that people want this, and therefore it is worth the attention of researchers, businesses, and (dare I hope?) governments.

(Why yes, I do hate Michael Pollan, why do you ask?)

Why do food and drugs need to be kept separate?

I spent years trying to perfect my alcoholic candy corn after all.

Willis, it seems like every other time you post, I need to look up a word that's in the OED or Urban Dictionary but not both.

I'm reminded of this: http://www.qwantz.com/index.php?comic=2259

Also, they really chose Solyent as the name, and it's not a joke/satire?

I would totally drink this for lunch but not dinner.

Yep, Ryan North said it:

I received TONS of email supporting the idea of this easy, convenient food so if you work at General Mills, know this: there is an army of internet people who want to eat your product, especially if you market it as "Multi-Purpose Food". It is 2012 and we are ready for a tin box labelled "Multi-Purpose Food".

Our bodies are ready.

Yep! Pretty dumb, huh?
