I figured that my combination of rustiness on the basic mechanics and need for grinding to beat that first boss would work out and make it so that grinding seemed fun and novel. Which it did, after 538 days (according to the "you get XP for however long you haven't played the game" screen, although it only counts the first week or so).

So now I'm grinding through some stuff and working out basic mechanics again. Someday soon that first boss will fall to my mind-bullet-fire thing.

Willis, it seems like every other time you post, I need to look up a word that's in the OED or Urban Dictionary but not both.

It would be The World Ends With You.

I just got to the part where Mr Haketamawhatever says the title line. I found it moving, because it originally parses as a bleak existentialist refrain ("you will no longer have agency in the world once you die, so do not take an interest in your legacy") but he changes it around to a delightful trope of humanism ("you will only experience as much as you choose to experience so like be friends with people and such").

Has anyone played the iOS version? I was thinking about giving it a go, but it's a little costly for an app. I haven't played either, so I wouldn't really have anything to compare it to either.

I played the iOS version for a bit on a friend's phone and found it pretty good. You don't have to worry about also controlling your partner in battle, which makes it a bit easier to focus.

That might be interesting. I kind of like the fact that you never actually get comfortable playing (I'm always focusing on one screen or the other, even as I get better at phoning it in). But I also wonder whether it's just a feature distracting me from how it's otherwise just an imprecise point-and-click jobby.

The idea is to focus on the partner with the light puck, in order to maximize damage. I got pretty good using Shiki when Is tarted replaying the game a few months ago, and could kinda operate both at the same time.

I stopped playing a little while ago, I got up to week three, around day 2 or 3 and kinda stopped because I was become a little too obsessive about leveling my pins correctly...which is a TON of micromanagement... Also trying to low-level hard mode is kinda...hard.

I managed to beat normal staying at level...17 I think.

I just dipped my toes into hard and it was... well harder than I expected. It seems like they actually expect you to block and the hell with that.

Soundtrack is great though. I just started the second week, so the new tunes that introduced breathed new life into the sounds from the first one. By which I mean: I was enjoying everything from the first week, and based on that alone I would've called it a good soundtrack, but now that I discover that there's more to it than what I've seen I'm ready to call it an excellent soundtrack.

Did I get old? How come there is cool stuff and all y'all kids talking about it and I have never heard of it?

This game came out in like 2007.

Ah, it's for Nintendo DS. That'll be the problem then.

I played it when it came out, and was rather impressed by it. Fun game.

Great game.

In terms of the iOS version, I feel like not controlling the partner takes away some of the charm of the game. Also, it's a game that really was designed around the dual screen of the DS and really uses the two well, not sure how it transfers to one screen.
