Basically, it's the closest I've felt to a game that simulates the feeling of an episode of Star Trek or Firefly. You get to redirect power from one system to another if needed, you get to open up hatches to evacuate oxygen to put out fires, you can beam aboard another ship and attempt to take it over, you sometimes have to fight off boarders yourself. Sometimes, you'll have to send a crewmember into an oxygenless room to repair the life support system, hoping that the job gets finished before the crewmember dies. It's intense.
It also has some roguelike elements (permadeath, randomly generated sectors), so it doesn't play the same way twice. It's great.

Never heard of it but that sounds cool.
There was a Star Trek game for... Sega I think. Did you ever play that?
I agree. It's a really great game. I'm still playing on easy and have yet to be able to beat it, but I am having a lot of fun with it.

Have you played with any ships besides the default yet? I unlocked one for reaching sector 5, the Torus, which is a different playstyle--you start with a high level ion blast an no other weapons (can disable systems, but damage nothing), but two drones; an attack drone and a defense drone. It's a bit trickier, but a nice change of pace. The biggest problem I faced was towards the end, keeping enough drone parts on hand, and the outer door location. Stopping some fires requires evacuating the air form half the ship.

Yes, I've Torus. The biggest problem is getting a good amount of drone parts as you have identified. They are the most expensive to buy from vendors and they are rarely dropped as quest rewards. I do like the playstyle it pushes towards though.
