Kodi's latest "Is this sexual thing for real?" topic: Road head

In the novel American Gods*, a character dies in a car crash while fellating the driver. I naively suspected that having sex with somebody operating a motor vehicle is so stupid that nobody would do it in real life**, but I recently learned that this particular act has a name, "road head", which suggests it at least has currency in the popular imagination. Does anybody know if this happens in real life with nontrivial frequency?

I think road head interests me because it sounds like the kind of thing I would make up if I wanted to slander human sexuality. Certainly, it makes what we usually call "risky sexual behavior" seem harmless by comparison. Another example of a very dangerous sex act is erotic asphyxiation while alone, but I'm pretty sure that's rare, or at least, deaths from it are rare.

* Which, incidentally, I never finished because it seemed that every other scene was sexually graphic.

** Although, given that people text-message while driving, I guess I shouldn't be surprised at anything a driver does short of blind man's buff.

I'm not gonna comment on the particular phenomenon, but as someone who's often responsible to the point of boringness, we've all done regrettably erotic things in cars on highways.

Also, road head has been used in movies, such as Crash and Hot Fuzz.

The awesomeness is genuinely significant, if only because it's so awesome. Based on one experience, the probability that it would not recur was a significant Thing Contemplation of Which Made Me Want to Kill Myself after my most recent breakup.

(Again, not road head, per se. But I did almost crash into a median.)

I haven't surveyed anybody and would be skeptical of the results of a survey on this topic anyway, but I personally know a guy who's gotten it on 3 occasions.

It's probably a bad idea, yeah, but I don't think it's terribly uncommon really.

In the grand scheme of things, there are worse things you can do behind the wheel. I tried playing Mario Kart DS while driving one time. It's very disorienting trying to steer two vehicles at once. On the other hand, I was able to beat the Elite Four in Diamond/Pearl no problem on a drive from Cleveland to Columbus.
