Original Series. But yeah. I mean, I've caught episodes here and there throughout my life, but only recently have I really gotten into it.
What a good show. It's really worth a try if you haven't thought much about it. Just now I was watching the one where the transporter malfunctions and splits Kirk into his positive qualities and negative. Neither can survive long without the other; one an animal full of fear and brutality, the other a good man quickly losing his edge.
Alex and I had discussed something similar a few months back. I had many qualms with people having children-- that it stemmed from lust and, at least in the Christian theology of lust being a sin, that having children arose from a state of weakness and sin. I later came to accept that lust, though a deadly sin, when tempered with good qualities creates something new. Wrath, tempered, is righteousness. Pride, tempered, encourages us to develop useful talents for the benefits of ourselves and others. And so this dark side of Kirk, tempered with his intellect, compassion, and courage, is what makes him into a successful commander and also an outstanding man.
It's not exactly profound, but it is still good to chew on these truths, if I may go so far, lest we forget them.
More importantly, watch Star Trek.

So, too, does Star Trek.

You should get into The Twilight Zone and Dr. Who, too. I say this because although I've never been a watcher of any of the above, I know they're famed for getting into philosophical territory and engendering good discussion.
I love the Twilight Zone. Kelsey and I would watch the marathons every New Years. They run for like, three days straight.
I have heard a bit about Dr. Who, too. At first, I had a resistant attitude towards it, because people told me it was good (I know, I'm lame). But now I think it could be a good idea to start checking it out.

I feel like if you want to talk fatherhood in Star Trek you need to talk DS9.
Also there's some stuff about Christianity as a mystery religion that explains why e.g. the Shakers died out.

Willis, it seems like every other time you post, I need to look up a word that's in the OED or Urban Dictionary but not both.

Nala got into Doctor Who, so I ended up watching a bunch of it with her. My thoughts on it:
It turned from "eh, I'll watch this with you" TV to "Oh my god what is going to happen next?" starting with the 11th Doctor, though I suspect that had more to do with the change in showrunners at the time than the actual actors. Pre-11 tended to be cheesier than I could handle, to be honest, though there were still standout episodes here and there.
So, my point is, if starting with the 9th Doctor doesn't do it for you, you might consider skipping to the 11th.
