Anyone else see it yet? It was pretty good, maybe even the best of the three. The plot/theme was a bit darker than the others, but in a good way.

Paper Mario Social: The Safe Haven of GameFAQs. (Board 2000083)
I've heard some really good things. I know one guy who's a diehard comic fan who wasn't blown away by it (especially the ending, whatever it is), but still said it was a good movie.

I liken it to one of the Bonds leading up to Goldeneye. Like it was fun, but the script was loose to the point that it doesn't stand up to *any* scrutiny, the plot was vague, and the characters were all paper thin, many of the new ones being kind of unnecessary.
I do really like what they did with Ben Kingsley though. That was a pleasant surprise and exactly the kind of thing that should be done with that kind of comic material. (I'm being vague to avoid spoilers, you see, but you know what I mean.)

Willis, it seems like every other time you post, I need to look up a word that's in the OED or Urban Dictionary but not both.

And in the interests of having a conversation and not just being a negative Nancy, a friend had an interesting point, which is that the whole thing went out of its way to prove that Tony Stark is all kinds of relatable. Like they keep hammering home that he thinks of himself as a simple mechanic (and not a multibillionaire industrialist) which is, y'know, silly.

He's a true compassionate conservative, I'm sure.

"It's a handy thing, this experimental attitude," said Castle. "The scientist can be sure of himself before he knows anything. We philosophers should have thought of that."
I would answer this, but i would likely wind up getting some snarky judgemental response to my post similar to what made fred and me stop posting here as much.

I don't think Gary is referring to a specific incident so much as the fact that we're (mostly) a bunch of liberal commie traitors.

Sorry, "commie" should be updated to "Islamo-fascist".

I too want to know what he's talking about.
Aw, now guys, that wasn't intended to be some obnoxious deconstructionist "but how can we sympathize with this man, with his misbegotten wealth, since capitalism is an inherently exploitative system?" thing.
It's just really key to the character that he makes short-sighted, self-interested, thrill-seeking decisions, and then deludes himself into thinking that everyone around him just can't get enough of his antics. The second one has him getting too drunk to stand and blowing up his own house, y'know, real consequences. Here they play the whole "eccentric but lovable genius" thing completely straight, to laughable extremes like when Rhodey can't use any of the dozens of unmanned armors that show up, so that he has to run through an exploding war zone relatively unarmed.
All the bits about being a simple mechanic are supposed to make us go "aw, that's our Tony!" when he does stuff like that, which is horrible.
But then the more I think about it, the more I think the Bond thing was an active directional choice (and not just for the closing sequence). Bond *is* kind of a lovable goof of a sociopath, and they're turning Tony into that, but they're trying to have their cake too.
