He seems to be a driving force to keep plot out of Mario. I've read for sure that he insisted that the plot in Paper Mario: Sticker Star be kept simple and have no characters except existing ones. He was also responsible for the lesser amount of plot in Super Mario Galaxy 2 compared to 1. I think he might be influencing other Nintendo games in a similar way, though I haven't heard this explicitly for any game other than PMSS and SMG2.

While I can (could?) appreciate a good video-game plot, I can't help but think that this makes sense. Nintendo, and particularly the Mario series, is one of the last bastions of video games-as-games, instead of video games-as-wannabe-movies. I'm reminded of the push by the developers of Super Smash Bros. Brawl to make it casual instead of competitive (pushing back against video games-as-sports).

I suppose I could agree for "main" Mario titles, but for a Mario RPG? It just bothers me.

Oh. Yeah, downplaying the plot in an RPG is… unusual.

As a fan of "video games as movies" (Metal Gear, Xenosaga, etc.), this really disappoints me...
