So, I've been thinking lately of what games I want to play. I've been on a tear, running through games like they're candy (I beat the first 2 Uncharted games within 4 days). So, what game comes to my mind?
Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga
A great game by all means, I've beaten it 100% at least twice, and that's not counting other unfinished play-thrus.
So, that got my thinking, why do I want to play this game again? A few reasons came to my mind- the battle system, the humor, nostalgia.
And then I thought "Hey, this would be a great top 10 idea!" Since we tried to get one going awhile ago, I figured I'd try again with this.
Here's what I was thinking. Everyone goes ahead and lists reasons why they would want to replay a game, even reasons that would not apply to you.
We get enough reasons to fill a bank, and then we narrow it from there.
Here's some concrete numbers:
We get a bank of 50 reasons.
People put down their top 20 reasons, and the top 20 move on.
Out of that top 20, we cut it down to our top 10. Voters also list a game he or she thinks goes with that reason.
Once we've got out top 10, we vote on the order/game, and then the writing starts. I was hoping each of us could take one reason, but of course that's a long time from now.
Oh, and I'll be compiling all the data for this, so no one else has to worry about it.
Sound good? I'll get a concrete list of my own at a later date~

Among the main requirements for me to replay games is familiarity and a sense of comfort in the gaming world. For example, Mega Man Legends and Morrowind, SMRPG and PM, all games where I take comfort in the world I am familiar with.

If you need more or differently formatted data, I'm game, but one game that I've been eager to replay is Super Metroid. With it, I'd say it largely boils down to nonlinearity, and novel experiences created by different gameplay choices. While I'm not experienced enough to have personally experience this, I know the well developed mechanics and nonlinearity make it attractive to speed runners, having to strategize a path to the end, and learn time saving moves you would never have to use in the main game.

Nostalgia or variety. Nostalgia would be for platformers mostly I think. I've played the first Kirby game through many times even though it's the same every time... that's nostalgia. I've played Deux Ex through many times because I wanted to be a different JC Denton (a speed run, or a careful run, or a pacifist run, etc.) and I felt like the world I saw and the way I felt about it could be different each time... that's variety.
So, here's our list so far:
Familiarity/Comfort
Non-linear gameplay/multiple ways to play a game/Variety
Impact of different decisions made
Nostalgia
And I'm just gonna throw in:
Achievements
Multiple endings
Atmosphere (Majora's Mask in a nutshell, and why I keep coming back)
Addictive battle systems (Tales Of, Baten Kiatos)
Powerful storyline (Metal Gear Solid)
Additional Content
"Challenge Mode" (Souls series, Ratchet and Clank)
Right now I figure we can try to get as many ideas as possible to get a good bank to choose from. The details can all come later, once we narrow it down to 20, or so.

I consume most media a couple of times. There's a lot of detail that you'll miss just because of where your head's at during a given read/watch/play. The simplest form is just seeing the connections that get revealed later on, the foreshadowing and such, but it extends way past that.

Oh this is for a top ten thing. That post isn't helpful at all.

Oh, yeah. Nostalgia. That's kind of the word I was looking for back then, isn't it?

Actually wil, that's a solid 2-3 reasons you gave right there.

I would say length is pretty important to me. There are many games I'd like to replay, for various reasons, but very few that I actually do. Majora's Mask is one of my all time favorites, but every time I start up a new file, I eventually get a bit bored with the familiarity of it all. On one hand, the nostalgia's great, but on the other, I always feel a little guilty investing a large chunk of time into something I've already experienced, when I could be playing something new.
So I like to replay games with a pretty short/reasonable length. Metal Gear Solid and Star Fox 64 are good examples. You can knock those suckers out on a lazy Sunday, and still devote the majority of your game playing time to a lengthy new adventure.

So I'm really enjoying vicariously replaying games (like Majora's Mask, actually), by watching my boyfriend play a game he hasn't but I have, so I get to experience it through new eyes.
