What does PMS think is the better saga?

I still have to give the nod to the Star Wars saga. While I consider myself a LotR fan, my undying passion for Star Wars just outweighs it. In this argument, the flaws of the prequals (Especially the abysmal effort put forth for Revenge of the Sith...) are carried by the magic of the original trilogy.

Oh, and if Star Wars "fought" Lord of the Rings I think Star Wars would win. Sauron ain't ****.

LotR. Not marred by any boring ones.

let's include anything canon (the books and the respective general universes, etc).

^ We're including EVERYTHING???

Then Star Wars and it's no question. A majority of the Star Wars EU is brilliant.

Star Wars, because the movies I've seen are at the very worst watchable, whereas the LotR books are a real slog. (I haven't seen the LotR movies.)

If it's neither true by definition nor falsifiable, then it isn't important.

Not even a remotely fair comparison...

LotR btw.

LotR had stunning production values and fantastic direction of not only the actors, but the score, sets, costumes and nearly every other aspect of filming. The attention to detail is nothing short of spectacular. It elevated the fantasy epic film to an art form, just as the source material had done for the nascent fantasy genre half a century and more ago (or raised it again; say what you will about the Dark Crystal, but it was awesome).

Star Wars has a ****ing shoe with kitmash engines glued to it because they wanted to throw more **** onto the screen. The source material is a ridiculous treatment which was all but abandoned for its utter and profound stupidity. Then it produced the prequels.

Everything makes more sense than the prequels.

i prefer the nitty gritty "choose your own destiny" theme of lotr to the "you don't have midichlorians, suck it" of star wars.

I will say that Star Wars inspired far better video games, though.

-Dark Forces
-Rebellion
-TIE Fighter (and I guess X-Wing)
-Pod Racer (**** you that was a solid as hell racer)
-Knights of the Old Republic and Sequel

Those are the only ones I'll stick my neck out for. I have happy memories of Rebel Assault, but I doubt it was actually that good in retrospect. Shadows of the Empire was a noble effort, but last time I played it it hadn't aged well. I guess it could conceivably have aged more since then.

Oh and implicitly every LotR game is terrible. I've only played like two of the movie tie-ins and only for like twenty minutes (a friend bought them for... some reason?). They were pretty generic Gauntlet-likes. I guess I'm open to other suggestions.

Oh, unless you assume that Tolkien influenced every game with a high fantasy setting, in which case I guess there's more to the story. Like it was involved in the perfect video game, Shandalar, then.

But don't forget that most video games with Tolkienish elements get their Tolkienism second-hand, from Dungeons & Dragons.

No love for Rogue Squadron? The first one on the Gamecube was amazing, especially for its time.

And **** KotOR2

Man, KotOR 2 was way better than the first one. It ends a little abruptly, but every character except like the light side bounty hunter was way more memorable.

Also, to preemptively deal with the criticism I heard the other day: the point isn't that the villain "wants to kill the force." The bad guy is just sort of a sock puppet, and the game is all about the internal life of the Exile and how it's interrupted by the intrusions of everyone s/he encounters. It starts with Kreia who's there expressly to problematize (damn, I hate that word) the light/dark distinction all the way up to the dude who's literally falling apart except he's too pissed off to die. The antagonists are just there to give you something to cut with your laser sword. I mean, c'mon. You talk the big bad to death. You yell the theme that Kreia's been trying to articulate all game long at him until he dies.

And okay, Rogue Squadron was pretty cool.

LotR: 4
SW: 2

wil, i'm not entirely sure of your vote since you made compelling arguments for both sides, but i stuck you under LotR.
