Should I buy an X-box 360?

I recognize that I'm vaguely depressed and am picking at straws for "shaking things up a little bit" options, so this is mere acquisitiveness which will ultimately fail to improve anything, but I also feel like it's kinda time for me to get with the times, and I have the cash for it. On that note, is getting a refurbished model as terrible an idea as I'd imagine it is, or does that sound like a safe bet?

Also, I'm not sure what I'd pick up for it. I like FPSs okay, but I'd never call them something to write home to mother about; even something like Half-Life is remarkable mostly for the ways that it's not like an FPS. Then I'd say I should pick up Mass Effect and Fallout III, but I also need to get a video card upgrade for my PC, and it's entirely conceivable I'd be able to play either of those after that. Which is my main point of tentativeness.

So I guess post your favorite 360 titles is what this topic is.

Halo, skate., and CoD are pretty much all I play, but my roommates enjoy Mass Effect (1+2, two of them have played through both more than six times collectively), Batman: Arkham Asylum, Dead Space, Resident Evil 5, Bioshock, Fable (1+2), Tomb Raider, The Orange Box, and a bunch of others.

the xbox is also nice because there's a version of netflix on it. iirc it's $5 a mo. and you don't get the entire library but it's got a lot of tv shows which is nice.

I don't know how warranty works for refurbished models, but I'd suggest you go new, or as new as possible. They do break a lot.

Sounds like you could probably get your needs met through an updated computer. I was going to recommend Viva Pinata, which is like Animal Crossing and Pokemon with all of the wit and charm Rare brings to the table, but I'm pretty sure it's for PC too. Halo's another good'n, but if you're not a big FPS guy, then it's probably not a system seller for you. On the other hand, you can play Braid, Shadow Complex, and Ikaruga on Xbox Arcade, which are all excellent games. I miss them the most.

Actually, Braid is playable on PC I think. Just grab that asap and feel the joy return to your soul.

I got my 360 for Christmas in 2006 and I love it. I don't play it much these days (Far too busy), but I always enjoy playing when I have some spare time. Anyways, these have been some of my favorite games, in no particular order:

1. Gears of War
2. All NCAA Football and Madden (07-10)
3. Kameo: Elements of Power (I loved this platformer)
4. Halo 3
5. Rock Band 1 & 2 (Fantastic group party games)
6. Guitar Hero III (I have 2 and Aerosmith as well, but they aren't great. Also, my love for GH has died over the last year and a half or so. I don't plan on ever buying another GH title)
7. Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts
8. SKATE

Oh, and to touch on the refurbished idea. I wouldn't recommend it. A buddy of mine rolled the dice on a refurbished one after his got red rings (He took the cheap route and only saved $15 - needless to say it wasn't worth it). He says if he had it to take back he would have mailed it to Microsoft to fix.

Mine has gotten red rings TWICE since I've owned it (Ironically in summer 08 and 09 during the exact same week in July), and I've used the Microsoft repair service. They were GREAT both times in terms of efficiency and I just like knowing that the manufacturer is doing the repairs.

Anyways, that has nothing to do with refurbished really but I don't like the idea. You say you have the funds so I'd say go brand new out of the box. Can't miss there AND you're under warranty for 2 years I believe. And if it goes red rings and they repair it you get 1 year of warranty back.

PC games are cheaper than their console counterparts, with better graphics and almost always preferable controls (but if you really like console controllers, that's your prerogative). I say upgrade your video card and continue gaming on the PC.

I'm not really a big PC gamer but that sounds like a sound plan. And I mean, though I don't have many PC games, the ones I do, I am kind of elitist about. Like, "oh, you play that for a console? Pssh. Noob. PC is the way to go!"

So maybe it's the way to go.

Anyways, if you're thinking of shaking it up, I mean, buying a video game console doesn't really seem like the way to go about things. I'm kind of projecting here, but if I'm feeling vaguely depressed the solution tends to be more outdoorsy. But that's just me projecting.

A PS3 might honestly be the better alternative for you. A majority of the 360 exclusives (such as the Mass Effects) can be played on PC, and the rest are probably ported to the PS3. You arguably get better value with a PS3 with the built-in blu-ray player.

I own all 3 of them (though I only have FFXIII for the PS3 and left it home while at school). I play teh 360, but not as much as I'd like to. There's more games I'm interested in on the PS3 anyway, than the 360...

I dunno, just something to consider. If memory serves me though, the new slim models are IMPOSSIBLE to find.

I apologize for the grammar/spelling in that last post. I'm lazy today.

Yeah, I went with the video card on the basis that it's rapidly approaching being a non-optional upgrade.

And you're right, Mark. One's journey toward not being miserable should include lots of going places that aren't your house.
